Barberton is a small town in Trumbull County, Ohio, located on the border of Trumbull and Summit counties. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It was originally called "Western Reserve" by the English colonists who settled in this area in the 17th century. The first settler in Barberton was John Denton who arrived in 1796. There were only five families living here when Colonel George Washington traveled through this area on his way to battle General Howe at Lake Ontario on December 7, 1794. Western Reserve name may have been derived from a Native American word meaning "land of milk cows." In 1814, Captain James Ketchum built a tavern near what is now the Barberton post office which became known as "The Horseshoe". In 1824, part of Trumbull County was created and Barberton became one of its townships. In 1827, it had a population of 205 residents and by 1830 had reached 256 residents. In 1835, it had an population of 438 residents and by 1840 it had reached 511 residents. In 1850, Barberton voted to become a village; however, because it did not have sidewalks or streetlights (it still does not), it remained known as "Western Reserve". On July 15th of that year, village officials opened the first general store within its walls - also named "The Horseshoe". An important event in early Barberton history took place when fire destroyed most of the business district around Main Street on November 10th 1863 during an afternoon parade attended by Trumbull county commissioners for Independence Day exercises sponsored by Trumbull Light Infantry Regiment #2 commanded by Capt.(R) Joshua Sibley 6th Ulysses S Grant's personal aide-de-camp carpenter and later Major General Electric Light Company Superintendent etc... The cause unknown but arson suspected due to scarcity & price high for lumber at that time
Barberton was founded in 1811 by John Barber and his wife Deborah. It was named for Colonel George Washington Barber, an aide to President James K. Polk. The area now known as Barberton was first settled by farmers and their families who worked the land that is now part of Akron. In 1836, the town became a city with its own government and mayor. The population of Barberton grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching over 100,000 people by 1920. However, World War I caused a decline in population growth; however, after the war the population rebounded and reached its peak in 1940 at 128,848 people. The city experienced another period of growth in the 1960s and 1970s when it became one of the leading center for social commentary in Ohio through its application of new technologies such as television news reporting and local broadcasting. However, due to economic difficulties during this time period, Barberton's economy stalled around 1980-1991. Since then it has seen a resurgence with many residents returning to town; however it still remains an economically struggling municipality with high poverty rates
