The first European settlers in what is now Barberton were French on February 14, 1792 when Pierre Bourg and his party set out from Quebec with five supplies of goods and twenty-four men. They arrived at present day Athens Township on May 3, 1792. In 1814, General William Clark's army passed through Barberton during their march from Cairo to Fort Mifflin. A group of local farmers organized a militia to meet the American force. The town was burned by American forces on June 10th as they made their way southward along the Scioto River. While most of Barberton was destroyed by fire in 1814 it did not lose its economy until after World War II when many new industries became established in the area including aluminum production and steel manufacturing which continue to this day.

The name of the town was changed from Ironton to Barberton on October 2, 1907. The downtown area is home to the offices of several local newspapers including the Medina Tribune and the Barberton Review. There are also a few businesses located within walking distance of most residents including two banks and four pharmacies. In addition to its downtown core there are several neighborhoods which can be found throughout the city limits: Barclay Heights (southwest), Beverley Hills (northwest), Forest Park (northeast), Grant Park ( southeast) and Hillcrest (southwest). A number of parks have been created within or near Barberton including Garfield Park which contains an annual farmers market; Fountain Square which includes a playground, swimming pool and fountain; Billy Goat Hill Recreation Area with baseball diamond, softball field and picnic areas; Harding Park featuring a basketball court; Sharpstown Golf Course which offers both championship-level golf tournaments each year as well as amateur play; Pioneer Valley Aquatic Complex features a 25-meter pool with multiple splash lanes for children as well as an outdoor gymnasium used by many municipal teams such as football/volleyball/badminton; and updates to form part of Downtown revitalization effort include construction of new streetscape features such as sidewalks that parallel Route 611 northward from downtown while also adding bike lanes southward along Elm Street near Interstate 471/exit #5B
Baldwin County was established on November 1, 1814 by the Ohio General Assembly. It was named in honor of John Baldwin, an American Patriot and member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio. The county seat is located in Barberton.
