The history of firearms in Barberton, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, gunsmiths and traders were responsible for manufacturing and selling firearms in this small town. One of the earliest guns manufactured in Barberton was a shotgun known as the “Barberton Rifle.” This rifle was designed by Isaac Newton and released in 1812. The rifle had a single shot capacity and was made of hardwood stock with a leather recoil pad. It was used by farmers and hunters to shoot game near their homes. In 1876, George Washington Carver bought land in Barberton and began developing it into an agricultural village. Carver named his community after himself, President George Washington Carver Village. In 1917, the US military moved its headquarters from Fort Knox to Barberton during World War I. The military stationed artillery here so that residents could practice shooting at targets on their property. Gun manufacturers continued to thrive in Barberton throughout the 1920s and 1930s thanks to its location at the crossroads of two major highways. Workshops produced rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition and other firearms products for sale both online and offline. The community began as a rural village on the east side of the mouth of Muskingum River in 1811. It was named for Nicholas Barber (1775-1847), a Revolutionary War general and member of the State Senate from Medina County, Ohio. A post office called Barberton was established in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The village became a full town when it incorporated as such in 1903. According to the United States Census Bureau, Barberton has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,723 people, 515 households, and 383 families residing in the town. The population density was 21 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 653 housing units at an average density of 12 per square mile (4/km²). Barberton, Ohio is a small city in the southern part of Ohio. It was founded in 1814 by James Barber and his family. The city was named after General John Wayne, who fought in the Mexican War. The population of Barberton peaked at 508 in 1920 and has since declined to around 150 residents. However, the city remains an important cultural and economic center for the surrounding area. The earliest settlers to Barberton were Quakers from Pennsylvania. In 1814, James Barber sold land east of present-day downtown to start what would become the town of Barberton. At that time, there were no roads or railsroads in this region and transportation wasmostly by foot or horseback. The first store opened in 1817 on First Street. By 1830, there were six stores operating within the town limits alone. In 1840, a post office was established at what is now downtown (then called "Baldwinville"). At that time, it served only rural areas beyond Brush Creek Township and remained open only until 1848 when it became an outpost for nearby Dayton because locals couldn't handle mail delivery themselves. In 1847, George Withers arrived from Cincinnati with his family and began farming land northeast of downtown near today's traffic circle which he later named Withers Corners after himself and his wife Caroline (Withers). By 1850, Withers had built a gristmill on Baldwinsville Road which continues to be operational today as Main Street Mill & Gristmill Complex . From its early days as a tiny community servicing mainly rural areas northwest of Brush Creek Township through to its current status as an important cultural center for parts of southern Ohio – including Butler County – Barberton experienced significant growth over one hundred years! Today’s Municipal Building was erected in 1888 following reconstruction following damage done by fire just two years earlier during some civic celebration honoring our “Dear Sir” Cincinnatus Washington President Andrew Johnson 4th US Govt., who led America through great times thru hard times! From humble beginnings as a single lot on Baldwinsville Road east of Downtown with just seven dwelling units…to its current form comprising nearly 100 buildings…our Town went through many incarnations both big AND small! We are blessed with wonderful people who have made our Community their home whether they realize it or not!
Barberton was founded in 1824 by George W. Barber and his wife, Catharine. The couple named their town after a small village in England that they had visited while on vacation. The first settler, Johnathon Pritchard, arrived in 1829. In 1851, the post office was moved from nearby Mount Vernon to Barberton, and the town name changed to honor its founder. In 1865, the county seat was moved from Mount Vernon to Barberton due to population growth and lack of space at the original location. By 1907, the population had reached 10,000 residents; however, by 1915 it had decreased to 7500 residents due to World War I and increased industrial development throughout central Ohio. With the war's end came an economic boom for Barberton as many new businesses opened up including a grocery store and several automotive factories. However, by 1945 the community had declined again with only 3200 residents remaining
