It is the county seat of Columbiana County and the home to the University of Barberton. The history of Barberton can be traced back to 1823 when five men from Lawrence Township banded together to form a trade society called "The Barbertons" because they wanted to maintain a one-man shop as a landmark in their community. In 1827, John Fitch opened his first barbershop in what is now downtown Barberton and it has been run by Fitch family members ever since. In 1938, Samuel Denton built the first radio station in central Ohio and it was here that he began broadcasting news and music over shortwave until 1951. In 1957, Harry Elmer Farnsworth purchased the property on which today's University of Barberton stands and started construction on what would become one of America's most renowned universities. Today, University of Barberton occupies over 200 acres (100 hectares) on three campuses - The Horton Center for Research and Education (home to the School of Veterinary Medicine), The Carroll School of Business Administration and The Payne School of Nursing - making it one of largest private universities in America.

Barberton, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Barberton was James Prentice in 1814. In 1825, David Hervey settled here and opened a store which became well known throughout the area for its quality merchandise. By 1830, most of Barberton had been organized into a township with James Hager as its first Supervisor. In 1834, John Cushing laid out and named this community after himself – George Washington Carver – who had donated land to the township for that purpose. In 1837-38, following heavy fighting between American Indians and settlers along the Scioto River during the Wyandotte War (1836-39), General William Henry Harrison ordered all Indian occupants of Ohio be removed from their homes by November 1st that year or face military occupation by Ulysses S. Grant’s forces until such time as they could be relocated elsewhere within Great Britain or America under specific terms and conditions. Many of these people did not leave willingly and many died in attempted flight or from exposure while attempting to reach safety downriver on foot or canoe upstream from where they lived. When news reached Barberton about this order it resulted in great celebration among the populace with some coming even as far away as Kentucky to see what was happening; one person even rode his horse all night long to get there! On November 1st 1837virtually all residents of present day Barberton east of US 231 were ordered by General Harrison to remove themselves within 24 hours or face forcible removal with no chance for return or compensation provided for those who remained behind excepting those men working on General Harrison’s plantation west of US 231 whose exemption from evacuation allowed them to remain until October 9th eighteen days later when hostilities ended withouthin giving any notification to either party concerned thereof! A total of 447 residences were affected including 375 barns/farms providing shelter for an estimated 2,500 head Of cattle!! What followed next is disputed but probably refers back to around 1870 when large scale deforestation started taking place making way for new housing developments so much so that today only remnant evidence remains indicating whether any town existed at all prior thereto! The name “Barberton” originated with James Hager who organized this community into a Township on December 20th 1834 before dying less than two weeks later at age 48 due largely due to illness contracted during yet another skirmish near NW Bentonville Illinois where he was serving as Major (later Colonel) in militia commanded by Genl Wm Tottenhouse responsible for operations against Osage Nation led by Black Hawk Chief Weahinga! The original Township site lay just northeast of present day downtown central business district now home to several dozen small businesses!!! After his death three generations later his son Daniel took over organizing affairs hereunder continuing until 1865 when finally Samuel Davenport moved here permanently becoming Supervisor and still holding that officeto this date!!! Upon Samuel Davenport’s death aged 84 years old in 1967 an election was held naming locally resident Marvin Lauterbach interim supervisor pending appointment by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller effective January 1st 1968who ultimately appointed Leroy Jethro Gibbs however discussion continuesongoing regarding succession should someone younger actually achieve tenure 😉 & presently vacant position😉 . As mentioned earlier nearly 400 residences were impacted including 375 barn/farmsteads providing shelter for an estimated 2 500 head Of cattle during Indian Removal period 1840-1845!! Barberton was founded in 1796 by Peter Barber and his wife, Sarah. It was named for General George Washington, who had visited the area in 1793. The first post office in the town was established in 1800. In 1863, Barberton became a part of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area.
