Barberton is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, population 9,812 as of 2010. It was founded in 1814 by James K. Barber and his wife Anna Maria. The town was named for General John Custer who fought in the Indian Wars and was killed at White River Bridge in 1876. In 1830, Barberton had two small churches: one Congregational and the other Presbyterian. In 1839, the first post office opened in Barberton with five mail sacks per week; it closed in 1945 due to budget cuts by the United States Post Office Department. The first school was built on a log cabin near present-day State Route 222 east of where US 22 crosses it today. The current building was completed in 1850 and is an example of Gothic Revival architecture styles which were popular during that time period across America. In 1863, when Ohio became a Confederate state during the American Civil War, many residents chose to remain within Union lines instead of following their government's dictates. This decision resulted in much conflict between those living within Union lines and those living outside of Barberton; this tension is still felt to this day as there are no streets or businesses named after Confederate soldiers or officers from that era (although there are several memorials/ monuments dedicated to them). The original railroad station was located at what is now State Route 223 west of town; it served as a hub for local travelers coming into/ out of Barberton as well as being used by local farmers for loading goods onto & unloading trains arrival & departure from Cincinnati Junction Railroad Station #2 on Third Street SE (now part of I-71). After years serving primarily as a stoplight on rural routes connecting towns throughout eastern Warren County, the old depot burned down on July 8th, 1924 whileUnion troops were attacking Parma Heights Road northeast of town; all attempts to rebuild it failed due to funding constraints set by then-US Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon.) In response to increased traffic along US 22 through town center caused by growing tourism activities associated with nearby Middletown (then called Beavercreek), local officials voted upon November 7th, 1928 to reroute US 22 through town rather than allow access from both sides ofatelite roadways making way for larger vehicles turning onto village streets only - still an occurrence today! The change also added about four miles (six kilometers) to roadway length which helped improve safety for drivers and pedestrians alike since trucks now could not easily drive offroad onto main thoroughfares without risking overturning or getting stuck under heavy machinery.). This rerouting has allowed downtown business owners such as Home Depot Inc., Allstate Insurance Co., Applebees restaurant chain owner Johnny Appleseed II and others more room inside their buildings while also freeing up street space north/west of Main Street for new development.; however, some residents have voiced concerns about increasing highway noise levels which can be heard even at night over residential areas just beyond downtown boundaries.)
Barberton was founded in 1796 by Anthony Barber and his family. It became a town in 1828, when it was added to the Union City, Ohio, village. In 1892, the village of Barberton merged with the city of Cleveland.
