Barberton, Ohio is home to the most firearms-related museum in the United States. The Museum of Firearms and Ammunition features more than 2,000 firearms from around the world, as well as antique guns and ammunition. It also contains a reconstructed gunsmith shop. Admission is free for all visitors. The Barberton Gunsmith Shop was built in 1892 by George W. Sears. Sears was an early pioneer of American firearm manufacturing and he founded Sears & Roebuck Corporation in 1892. The Barberton Gunsmith Shop manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols and machineguns until it closed its doors in 1957. Today, the shop remains open as a museum and offers tours of its interior and exterior on select days/times during the year (see website for schedule). One of the most famous weapons exhibited at the Museum of Firearms and Ammunition is arguably Colt's Model 1851 Rifle which served as a basis for both Hollywood movie stars such as William Sargent (Buster Keaton) and John Wayne (Errol Flynn) while also being used by US Cavalry Regiment Major Don Armstrong in numerous frontier engagements during the 1860s-1870s period herein referred to hereinabove known as “the Great War” or “The Mexican War” etc., etc., etc.).
