Barberton is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie metropolitan area. The first white settler in Barberton was James C. Barber who arrived on July 5, 1814 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and founded the town of Barberton on a tract of land he purchased from John Butler. In 1826, Isaac Prentice moved to Barberton and established a mercantile business there. A post office was established in 1827 and served until 1836. In 1830, George Wernham erected a log cabin near the present day intersection of Washington Road and State Route 623. By 1830, Barberton had become an important center for trade with surrounding counties including Wayne (now Muskegon Heights), Hamilton (now Painesville), Fairfield (now Darien), and Chardon (now Mentor). In 1840, Daniel Ransom built a sawmill on the banks of the Scioto River in what is now downtown Barberton. The mill continued operations until 1886 when it became automated by J&R Sawmills Incorporated. In 1850s and 1860s there were large-scale agricultural settlements developed within or adjacent to Barberton including: West End Village on Canandaigua Creek; North End Village on the north side of Canandaigua Creek; South End Village near High School; East End Village near US 21/US 23; Allendale Township on Canandaigua Creek between Allendale Hills Drive and I-480 eastbound); Hermitage Township along Canandaigua Creek between Hermitage Hills Drive and I-480 westbound). During prohibition in 1919-1920 some residents formed "The National Prohibition League" to resist liquor laws passed by Congress under President Woodrow Wilson which they considered unconstitutional attacks on individual liberties opposed by many prosperous Americans such as themselves while their fellow citizens got rich off Ulysses S Grant's massive alcohol smuggling operation during Reconstruction era (the main goal being unifying all anti-prohibition forces across party lines so that they could coordinate their activities against federal law enforcement). Most notably prominent member Tom Hickey who served as treasurer for "The National Prohibition League". On November 8th 1920 United States Senator William Jennings Bryan delivered his famous speech in front of The Amalgamated Clothing Workers' Union Local 501 which began what would be called America's Progressive Era: modernism taking root among working class people throughout America due largely to Bryan's leadership followed by Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt through New Deal programs like Social Security & FDR's Second Term presidency marked an end to laissez faire capitalism & concentrated wealth within a few hands while everyday people experienced increasing poverty & automation leading directly to mass unemployment during Great Depression era dubbed " Silent Revolution ". However progressive values entrenched themselves further into American society following World War II as Operation Paperclip led Nazi Germany acquire numerous talented blue collar workers including thousands of Jews who were sent back to Europe where they perished in concentration camps or were used for slave labor without any opportunity for retribution or compensation - one example being Steelworker's International Union v. Lindahl case which resulted in landmark Supreme Court decision allowing employees right to unionize thru representation without prior consent from management - effectively ending discrimination against unions throughout American industry via workplace collective bargaining process starting with Ford Motor Company

The first humans to move into what is now Barberton were settlers from West Virginia in 1795. They named their community after George Washington, who had visited their homeland prior to his inauguration as President of the United States that year. The town's first store and post office opened in 1801. In 1821, it became a village and was renamed Barberton again in honor of its founders. McClernand In 1865, following the end of the war, Barberton reverted back to its original name once again when it became an independent township under Ohio state law; however, it remained unincorporated until 1959 when it joined with Medina County to form Medina Township (now known as Carbon Township). The township has since been divided into two sections: one located within Carbon Township and another located within Woodbury Township which borders on Cincinnati proper

In 1824, the new state of Ohio was created, and Barberton became part of the newly formed city of Columbus. However, Barberton continued to grow rapidly, reaching its peak population of 30,000 people in 1850. In 1870, the city Limits were passed which limited growth to the downtown area only. However, this did not stop Barberton from continuing to grow quickly; by 1910 it had reached 50,000 residents. Throughout its history, Barberton has been a center for education and industry; many businesses have been located here including CiraCarta Inc., AmocoPhillips Company and United States Steel Corporation.
