The first settlers in Barberton were farmers who came from Pennsylvania in 1795. They built a log cabin on the present site of downtown Barberton in 1800. A post office was established here in 1812. By 1830, there were nine families living here. In 1836, John Laughlin founded the Newark Steel Works here, which became an important economic center for Ohio and southeastern Indiana during the late 19th century. In 1892, Mayor George Widespread appointed Edward Payson as manager of municipal services to take care of public improvements including street paving and water systems; this began what would be called "Payson's Progress." From 1908 until his death in 1916, he was also president of Akron Common Schools Corporation. In World War II, Barberton played an important role as a manufacturing center for war-related materials such as ammunition and steel products; it also produced fuel oil and other products for local use. The city's economy declined after World War II but has since bounced back with new businesses being incorporated into the cityscape over the last several decades: Airlines like American Airlines (now Delta Air Lines) have made Barberton their main hub starting in 1984; The Boeing company had its headquarters here from 1976 to 1993 before moving to nearby Clevland; And many new retail developments such as Sears Holdings (which moved its headquarters from Hoffman Estates, Illinois to Sears Tower adjacent to Interstate 90), JCPenney (now Macy’s), Ford Motor Company’s Highland Park Assembly Plant (closed down by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles USA LLC), Kmart (closed down by Sears Holding Corporation) have all been located within walking distance or close by since 1990 or so when they opened their doors!
Barberton was founded in 1814 by George Washington Barber and his family. The city was named after General David Barber, who led the American Revolutionary War. In 1848, the town of Delaware and the village of Beans were merged into Barberton.
