The village of Barberton began as a small farming community in 1881 and was incorporated as a village in 1907. In 1969, Barberton became one of seventeen townships in Mahoning County when it was split off from Defiance Township. As part of the Mahoning Valley Authority's land acquisition program, Barberton annexation took place on July 1, 1971. The Village of Barberton has two downtown blocks with streetcars running through them and four wards which are used for election purposes: First Ward- Paul Riegle Jr., Second Ward- Barbara Sawaya, Third Ward- Timothy Shively and Fourth Ward- Arlene Kraftman. There are also several scattered villages including Pleasantview (northwest), Defiance (southwest), Academy (southwest) and Willowgrove (northeast). Each village has its own police department; however, all services are coordinated by the Village Council which meets every other month at 7 p.m., plus occasional special meetings or functions such as fund raisers or auctions that may call for additional council members not elected at regular intervals to attend depending on their role within the village hierarchy There are also numerous private businesses located throughout town including Subwaysand KFCand US Cellular Storewith full service restaurants inside each one with multiple locations across town catering to a wide variety of customers like family diners and business people who need quick meals during their work hours In addition to all this there is also an extensive library system serving both school districts as well as adult citizens who reside within walking distance either free or discounted rates All told there are over 100 businesses comprising more than seventy individual industry sectors that contribute some $5 billion in economic activity annually . The town was founded in 1811 by Captain John Barber and his family. In 1907, it became a city under the name of Akron. The first white settlers to Barberton were James Tilton and his family who arrived from Connecticut in 1793. Other early settlers included Captains John Barber and Joshua Stephens. Stephen Denny took up land near what is now downtown Barberton in 1811 and began to grow corn on his farmstead which he named "Denny's Corners". He also raised pigs and hogs on his property until 1830 when he sold all of this land to Captain John Barber for $1,000 In 1814, Captain John Barber married Amey Stroud who had come to America with her father from England two years earlier. They set up housekeeping in an old log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Barberton which they called "The First House". The first school in town was built on local lot #2 in 1815 by teacher Obadiah Copley using materials given to him by Captains John and Joshua Stephens as part of their gift to the community after they moved into their new home Captain John Barber died suddenly on February 12, 1816 while out fishing with friends at Pembroke Island off the coast of Virginia while trying to become rich through trade with that area His widow Amey continued raising children alone until she became widowed again around 1840 After her second husband's death she lived with her three young daughters (Annie Stroud; Martha Stephenson; Harriet Beecher Stowe) for about twenty years before moving out into her own home around 1850 Thereafter she spent most of her time caring for her grandchildren who were living scattered throughout different parts of Ohio until they all came together during World War II as one group known as "The Scattered Generation" By then she had advanced dementia so much that many people thought she never really slept through those wars - though some remember hearing her say “I’ll be darned if I do sleep through another war” even as late as 2002 while still struggling daily just prior to her death aged 88 years old In 1941 when all but two hundred residents left because of World War II shortages due mainly to Great Depression effects Mrs. Stroud allowed them back within a few months when food coupons were sent over from Washington D.C . After being closed for almost fifty years Mrs. Stroud reopened it briefly during Holy Week period before finally closure once more effective communication systems made it possible once more .
