Barberton is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Barberton were French traders and missionaries in the late 17th century. In 1800, George Washington explored the area and named it "Barberton" after his brother-in-law Samuel Barber. In 1812, General William Henry Harrison took refuge in nearby Bedford while he fought against Rossendale's forces during the War of 1812. He ordered his troops to stop eating all of their food because they needed energy for battle. This caused some locals to nickname him "the Eaters of Americans". When he left on his campaign against Canada in 1814, many people followed suit and renamed their town "Harrisonburg" after him. The town site was bought by John Dibble in 1836 from George Hennepin for $2,500 ($ as of 2019). Dibble built a small log cabin here and called it "Dibble's Cabin". He started a sawmill which manufactured flooring for local homes and businesses until 1861 when it stopped operations due to competition from larger mills located closer to Cleveland. After years of debate over who should take over the mill assets (Dibble or his son-in-law), the property passed through several hands before it came into the ownership of John Fournier in 1915 who placed it back into production as an industrial park with a cotton gin and other associated businesses known as 'Fournier Park'. The business became defunct in 1984 but reopened as Heritage Cotton Mills Incorporated in 1990 manufacturing jute products until its closure in 2001; however since then there has been limited activity with only occasional tours offered (see below). A museum/historic district has been created around this complex including buildings from both satellite images taken circa 2004 depicting early 20th century life within 'Fournier Park' while also adjacent engine house originally used by Jute Manufacturing Corporation dating back ca 1920 which still stands today vacant awaiting restoration) . From this point forward 'Fournier Park' Museums began operation offering programs revolving around local history open daily 9am - 5pm EST on weekdays except holidays starting April 2nd thru October 15th . There are also numerous restored historic buildings located throughout much later period including a brick building that once served as Post Office & Jail (now home to Local History Museum) ; Stephenson Engine House – one half mile south east corner of Park Avenue between Third Street South & Erie Avenue NE #1 @ 10 am , Saturday & Sunday 9am–5pm; original blacksmith shop(built 1830) on Third Street south just east side of Euclid Avenue; Secondgeneration grocery store(opened 1901) on FourthStreet north just east side Of Onondaga Avenue; post office(1862), jail(1896), schoolhouse(1910), hardware store(1920), restaurant(1930s)/nightclubs/bars(( opened 1935)), movie theater(( opened 1940)) ..... Timber trading continued along Buffalo Creek until about 1840 when Clear Fork Turnpike replaced buffalo trails making transportation more efficient for shipping supplies between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvaniabayou country By 1850 there were two sawmills operating near present day Barberton: one operated by David Crouse ran continuously with 11 employees; another operated by Nicholas Donatelli ran intermittently with 4 employees producing 180 boards per day Output increased significantly during second half of 19th century when river levels rose resulting demand for lumber above average levels forced mills closed James Wiltz purchased David Crouse's mill complex c1900 Wiltz eventually become president owner&operator Eastern Railroad Co.(ERRCo.) Barberton is a small town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Barberton were two brothers, John and Nicholas Barber, who arrived in 1788. They built a cabin on the edge of what is now town and named it "Barberton." In 1814, Nicholas Barber's son-in-law Samuel Darragh moved to Barberton from Newtown Township and began trading goods for salt water from the Great Lakes. He named his business "Darragh & Sons" after himself and his father-in-law. Darragh married Sarah Cook in 1815, and they started a store together in downtown Barberton. They also operated a gristmill which provided flour for local businesses until 1840 when it was replaced by an engine mill that still stands today. The community had several churches until 1881 when Staithe Baptist Church was built on High Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. That building still stands as one of the most important landmarks in town today. In 1868, John Hargrave opened a grocery store on Main Street near First Avenue where he continued to operate until his death in 1951. His son Julius then ran the store until 1978 when it closed down due to recessionary times within the industry. Then, responsibility for running the store passed through many hands before finally being purchased by Danette's Grocery Inc., which operated it until 2002 when it closed again due to economic challenges within that industry as well as reductions in customer base over time). The last commercial use of Main Street was for racing events held at Brownstown Racetrack beginning on November 1st each year from 1945 through 1958 inclusive; these have since been relocated to nearby Uniontown Speedway where they currently operate (though races are still occasionally held at Brownstown Racetrack)). There were also several residences located along this street during its heyday including: "The Farm", "Hargrave House", "Lamar House" (now called simply "The Farm"), "(now known as) Beechfield Place", "(now known as) Butler Place" (later renamed) ", etc... However all but two of these buildings have since been demolished or removed from their original locations with only(the former) Hargrave House remaining extant within town limits today.... According to Census data taken in 2000 there were 3264 people residing in Barberton; this number had decreased slightly by 2006 estimate to 3092 however increased by 2010 estimate to 3112due largely to annexation of neighboring townships by Cincinnati – bringing total population growth within county up 5%. This increase can be partially attributed to new development projects such as Rogers Arena which has seen large construction projects underway throughout its entire life span starting with its groundbreaking ceremony on July 12th 2006… This newly annexed township includes much larger acreage than did any other municipality within Delaware County prior thereto making possible more professional development opportunities for residents therein….Now home bothto highly skilled professionals such as architects and engineers working alongside manufacturers/builders while providing ample open space for families…..This trend continues unabated with additional housing developments proposed or under consideration throughout downtown areas of Cincinnati ensuring that everyone has access designated public spaces outfitted with amenities typical of larger municipalities…." Barberton was founded in 1788 by Peter Barber and his wife, Catharine. The town was named after the Battle of Bunker Hill, which occurred in 1775. In 1834, the town became a part of Hamilton County. In 1868, it was annexed by Cleveland.
