Avon is a small, agricultural town in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,730 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Avon were the Wyandot people who started to arrive here in 1821. They built their homes around a small stream that flowed through the town. In 1827, Englishman John Marshall founded Marshall's Store in Avon and named it after himself. The store became one of the most important in Avon and played an important role in its early years. In 1837, settlers from Northern Indiana arrived in what is now Hardin County and began to settle here on land that had been donated by James Kappeisbach. When they arrived, they were met with hostility from the local Native Americans because they thought they were taking away their land. Over time, however, these settlers came to rely on the friendship and support of the native people for food and shelter. This relationship eventually led to trade and commerce between these two groups as well as common defense against raiders and encroachments by other tribes living nearby. Avon continued to grow during this time and soon became one of the most populous towns in Hardin County. By 1850, it had a population of 1,500 people and boasted a busy market place where citizens could purchase goods from all over Ohio and Kentucky without having to go too far out of their way or spend too much money. By 1860, Avon had become an important transportation hub due to its location close to both Dayton AND Cincinnati! Many businesses used this location when traveling between these two cities as well as other parts of Ohio including Youngstown & Sandusky which lay outside of Avon's boundaries at that time (though today those communities are part of Dayton). To accommodate this growth there was also development withinAvon itself with many residences being erected along State Street (now known as Main Street) starting around 1865-1868 including some very fine examples such as Mrs John Witherspoon's House (later renamed "The Encyclopedic" after Mrs Witherspoon herself), The Second Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1865), The Masonic Lodge No 4 (founded 1865), Griggs Block Schoolhouse (1867), Mr Gentry’s Millinery Shop (1868), Pekach’s Drugstore(1869) & Dr Pepper Bottles Factory(1872). This period saw significant changes for avonians themselves with many families moving away from rural life for reasons such as easier access to education or better opportunities ahead – all while remaining attached via social interaction through churches managed institutions like schools/universities etc., a trend that continues up until present day!
