When Avon, Ohio was founded in 1869, target shooters had to find other ways to bring in their revenue. The town's first shooting ground was a small lot at the corner of Elm and Main streets. In order to support the activity, local farmers raised pigs, chickens, and cows for meat and eggs. As ammunition became more affordable and available on the market, townspeople turned to shooting targets as an alternate means of generating income. The early target shooters used crude nailed boards as mounts for their targets. More sophisticated targets were made from thin sheet metal or wood that could be easily cut into desired size using a jigsaw or saw. Over time, better materials and equipment became available that allowed for even greater accuracy with these projectiles. By 1910, there were several buildings in town where people could purchase “targets” which they would then use to shoot at paper dolls or moving figures set up on poles in their front yards. This made Dayton also part of the larger Cincinnati metropolitan area which included Pittsburgh and Cleveland at that time
