Avon, Ohio has been a center for firearms since 1837. The town was founded by Nicholas Avon and his family after they acquired land near the confluence of the Miami and Erie Rivers. In 1851, Avon became one of the first towns in the United States to outlaw handguns. In 1865, Avon hosted the Second American Civil Warbattle between General Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army and Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. The battle resulted in over 50 dead on both sides with over 100 wounded. In 1865, Avon also welcomed President Abraham Lincoln as he visited the town to deliver remarks at its celebration of its incorporation into the United States. In 1903, Avon became home to Elmer Keith’s Pistol Shop which is still in business today! At that time, ElmerKeith’s was one of only a few pistol shops in America that featured fully automatic weapons like machineguns and cannons! After World War II ended, many Americans stopped owning handguns because they felt that gun control laws had become too stringent. However, gun ownership continued to be legalized in Ohio until 1994 when it was repealed by then-Gov.(and current) John Kasich
Avon, Ohio is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The name "Avon" comes from the Shawnee word "hawa," meaning "place where dandelions grow." The first settlers in what is now Avon arrived in 1792 when John Stephenson and his family founded a small cabin on the south side of present-day Avon Lake. In 1801, Peter Curell platted and named what would become Avon Township after he traded goods with the Potawatomi Indians for land near modern day Mount Pleasant. A post office was established at Avon in 1812, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1827, avocados were introduced to America by José de Jesús Figueroa y Llanos and became popular as a product of this new country. When demand outstripped production, Figueroa started a fruit packing company that continued until 1912. By 1830 there were over 200 people living inAvon Township; by 1840 there were 350 residents living there. In 1868 during the American Civil War twoand one-half miles northwest of town on US Route 3 (now State Route 220) between New Albany and Athens stood an important Confederate army depot known as Camp Butler which helped supply General Robert E Lee's army with food and munitions during its Siege of Petersburg. After the war ended Union forces burned Camp Butler to remove all evidence of Confederate military activity from plain view across much of central Ohio including Avon township which lay within Union lines but saw no fighting due to lack of volunteers willing to cross into Confederate territory One reason for this absence may have been fear among early settlers that any vestige of resistance would result in retribution by local Native Americans who still held strong traditional ties to their land and ways of life bordered by white settlements . A separate story has been told about how pumpkins were discovered growing around or close to Camp Butler while participating archaeological digs conducted nearby during the late 1990s led archaeologist Dr Lisa Nemeth into finding artifacts associated with Prehistoric Mississippian cultures including midden piles rich in shells dating back 2200 - 1700 years old! This discovery caused great excitement within our community as we knew previous information had been hidden behind cultural debris for many years! As archaeologists continue their fieldwork adjacent to Camp Butler they plan alsoto excavate an ancient water tower thought to be over 500 years old! With these latest discoveries we can only imagine how much more knowledge will be found throughout avontown history over time!

Avon is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Summit Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Avon was John Prentice in 1792. He and his family moved to what is now Avon from West Milford, Connecticut before the American Revolution. The Prentice home still stands and is currently being used as a museum. In 1824, James Fenton bought some of the land that makes up present-day Avon from the Pottersville Township trustees. After purchasing more land in 1831 and 1833, he founded what would become Avon Academy (later known as John Marshall High School). In 1852, Jens Rasmussen started building what are nowAvon Municipal Library and Courthouse on Main Street just north of US Route 422; it would later be renamed after him when it became a public library system within the town limits. In 1865, Wm Schieffer purchased 9 acres (3 hectares) of land east ofpresent-dayAvon for $850 dollars from Abram Dornfeldt who had been forced to sell his property during the Civil War because he did not have enough money to pay for military supplies that were needed by his warring factions in Ohio. This parcel became Schieffer's farmstead which continues to be operated as a private residence today. On December 12th 1905 local resident Augustus Hinton donated 5 acres (2 hectares) southeast of present-dayAvon to build an all-weather ice rink which remains operational today as "The Ice Rink". On Valentine's Day 1912, avontOWN organized its own fire department with 30 volunteer firefightersmen led by Captains Atherton and Mitchelson under Captains Whitehurst and Aldridge respectively due to lack of available equipment at their respective townships' departmentsalarm stations located on Race Road between Canfield Avenue and Cleveland Heights Boulevard! On July 8th 1914 avontOWN erected its first schoolhouse/ Administration Building on Center Street near wherepresent-dayAvon High School stands today! The first class graduated from this building on September 16th 1915! Doris Kappeler '64 was one such graduate who attended Avondale Elementary School until she moved into her current home across FirstEnergy Drive NW from her Alma Mater in 1978!

In 1801, Avon became an incorporated town. By 1840, it had reached its peak population size, with over 1,000 residents. However, by 1850 Avon had shrunk to just seventy-five people. The townsfolk of Avon experienced a dramatic decline in population during the late 19th century due to various factors including disease and natural disasters such as the Great Dayton Flood of 1851. In 1912, however, Avon regained its former population size and status as an important local center for commerce and industry. In 1966,Avon became one of fourteen villages in Lucas County (later Ohio) that were consolidated into the new city of Cleveland.
