Avon is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Dayton metropolitan area. The name "Avon" was first given to the community by General John Avon in 1806 when he and his family settled there after fleeing British rule. In 1812, Avon became part of the new Northwest Territory under the United States Constitution. From its beginning as a small agricultural settlement, Avon has grown into an important commercial center with a diversified economy and strong cultural traditions. Today, Avon is home to numerous businesses andUFIS (United States Forest Service) headquarters for its many sawmills that produce pineapples, apples and other fruits and vegetables for local markets; as well as four schools: Admiral Fenton High School (grades 9-12), Beechwood Middle School (grades 5-8), Great Lakes Elementary School (ages 3-5), and Hancock Middle School (grades 7-9). The Town of Avon was Incorporated on February 6th 1870 by order of Governor George Rogers Clark from parts of Butler County which had been organized as Lawrence Township three years earlier under the state government. At that time it included only what are now the townships of Summit Heights Addition, West Park Addition, East Park Addition and North Park Addition; all but one were annexed to become Avon in 1924 when Summit Heights became too populous to be contained within one township while West Park remained independent because it shared borders with neighboring Lawrence Township. Avon's growth slowed during World War II due to lack of military production opportunities in southern Ohio while northern Ohio thrived due to jobs in munitions manufacturing; however since 1945 local industries have grown tremendously with warehousing/distribution companies such as JBS Foods Inc., PepsiCo USA & Canada Limited Partnership and American Rubbermaid Company before becoming major employers today in light heavy industry such as engineering/manufacturing firms including PPG Industries plc., Syngenta AG & Co KG until 2005 when it merged with Proctor & Gamble Company; health care services such as Sutter HealthCare Group plc.; real estate development including several million dollars invested into downtown areas housing developments such as One Hyde Place LLC which replaced an older office complex built on land leased from Lorain National Bank nearly fifty years ago; retail stores including Sears Holdings Corporation until 2004 when it merged with Kmart Holding Company creating Sears Roebuck & Co.; avocados NV AgroSciences Incorporated until 2006 when they merged with Yucaipa Valley Creamery formingNVAgroSciencesInc.-the largest avocado processor in North America] For over two centuries this community has been known for its fruit industry - specifically apples - making it one of America's leading apple growers both nationally and internationally."
