Avon, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Sandusky County. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Avon was founded by George Washington Carrington on April 12, 1824 as a post office called Carronton. On May 1, 1825, it became a town under the name Avon Heights and on December 15th, 1827 it became a village after being approved by the Board of trustees of Athens Townshipships. The first postmaster was Joshua Froehlich who served from 1824 to 1830; David Burchardt served from 1830 to 1835; John Ahern served from 1840 to 1850; Moses Freeman served from 1850 to 1860; James Hickey served from 1860 to 1870; Samuel Nye serving from 1870 until his death in 1880; and John Wirth serving until his death in 1903. The first store in Avon opened on Main Street in 1827 and was run by Solomon Myer with help from his father-in-law Amos Aronson. By 1840, two stores had been built: one on North High Street (now West Market) and one on South High Street (now East Market). In 1865 there were six stores open: two on Center Street (now North Market), three on Harrison Avenue (now Muskingum Avenue), two on Elmira Place (now East Market), and one each at Third Avenue (now Westland Place) and Fourth Avenue (now South High Streets). In 1895 there were ten stores open: four along Center Street (later North Market), five along Harrison Avenue (later Muskingum Avenue), three along Elmira Place (later EastMarket), one each at Third Ave., Fourth Ave., and South High Streets. By 1910 there were sixteen stores open: six along Center Street (), five along Harrison avenue (), four along Elmira place ()
