The town's first store was opened in 1815 by Elias Brouncker with goods brought overland from Canton by wagonloads; this was followed by a bakery in 1816 by Ezekiel Potter; an hotel in 1830 by Elijah White; a schoolhouse in 1840 by James Fenton; a ferry landing (later called Ferry Landing Park) across the Scioto River at what is now State Route 9W near downtown avon in 1850; an engine shop (now known as Riddle Manufacturing Company) on Delaware Street between Center Avenue and West Side Road in 1860; an agricultural Implement Factory (now known as Cargill Inc.) on Delaware Street between Center Avenue and West Side Road about 1870; two churches: First Presbyterian Church erected about 1830 on lotPurchase from Nicholas Haggerty for $2 monthly lease from Wm Morrison & Co.; Second Baptist Church built 1865 opposite First Presbyterian Church ; four stores - A & G Store established1815, Blacksmith Shop1816-20, harness factory1830-35, grocery store1840-45 - soon joined forces into one large store proprietorship under name "Avons". Avon, Ohio was founded in 1795 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Susannah. The city was named after the AVON valley in England. The first post office in Avon opened in 1814. In 1868, the city was annexed by Cincinnati.
