Avon, Ohio is a small town in the Butler County area of central Ohio. It was laid out in 1814 and named for Sir John Avon, 1st Baronet. The population was 2,542 at the 2010 census. The Avon Community School District has schools inAvon, Delaware Township and Grafton Township. The town was founded by refugees from Great Britain who had fled to America during the Napoleonic Wars. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Miami River near what is now Delaware Township. In 1828, they donated land to create what is now Grafton Township; it included present-day Avon and part of Delaware townships. In 1838, James Kapp opened a store on Main Street inAvon for sale Components of pork products and other groceries to farmers in nearby Jackson and Hocking counties. By 1840, Kapp had become one of the largest grocery stores in America with two stores and twenty employees. He continued to operate his store until 1906 when he moved his business to Columbus, Ohio. His store remains an important part of local life today as a museum open daily from 9:00am – 3:00pm except winter days when it's open from 10:00am - 2:00pm (closed Mondays). In 1865, avoan native Ephraim Burr developed land east of town along the Miami River which became known as Burr Lake after him; it still constitutes much of contemporary Avondale Heights development south of I-675 north of State Route 362 (state roads are numbered); this development began around 1900 concurrent with growth throughout Butler County westward towards Dayton proper due largely to railroad investment including construction crews working on various lines through that area during that time period as well as growth within adjacent communities particularly those lying east/southeastof Indianapolis then Cincinnati prior thereto all culminating with annexation by Dayton proper following World War II primarily because some aspects thereof were attractive such as its location within commuting distance both then & now enabling easy accessitherto greater metropolitan areas thenceforth whenever needed or desired wink wink
