The history of gun magazines in Avon, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. Gunsmiths and dealers in this small town began stocking pistols and rifle ammunition in various stores and homes. In 1821, John A. Sohier opened a shop in the village ofAvon on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. At that time, Avon was only a small farming community with a population of about 150 people. Sohier's business grew quickly and he soon became one of the leading merchants and gunsmiths in town. He sold his store and all his equipment to John Prentice in 1827. Prentice operated his store for many years until it burned down in 1853. Then, John Bemis took over the store from Bemis and continued to sell handgun ammunition, firearms, tools, fishing supplies, saddles, horseshoes, general merchandise and other items until 1850 when he retired from business completely. In 1857, Charles Hickey opened a hardware store at Ninth Street and Erie Avenue inAvon. This was the first hardware store in town – it later merged into Hickey's Hardware Company which still operates today as a family-owned business headquartered near Painesville Heights on Cleveland's east side.]]Hickey also began stocking pistol ammunition at his store.]]Hickey's Store closed its doors for good on December 12th 1951.]] However, gun magazine sales continued to thrive throughout these years due largely to two factors: (1) demand by farmers for efficient means of transporting large quantities of munitions necessary for their crops; (2) low prices offered bygunsmiths/dealers who were able to source high quality firearms at bargain basement levels.]]During this time period there were several major firearm manufacturers including Smith & Wesson([[Smith & Wesson manufactured handguns starting around 1851 before moving upmarket eventually becoming known as Colt Firearms]]), Springfield Armory ([[Springfield Armory produced rifles beginning around1836 before moving upmarket eventually becoming known as Remington Arms]]), Ruger Bros., Samms & Co., Kenworth Gunsmithing Company ([[Kenworth Gunsmithing Company built shotguns starting around 1840 before moving upmarket eventually becoming known as Savage Arms]])), Remington Arms([[Remington Arms manufactures revolvers beginning around 1847 before transitioning into automatic firearms production later that decade]]), Browningarms,[[Browningarms produces handguns beginning around 1855 before transitioning into rifle manufacturing later that decade]]), Mossberg & Sons,[[[Mossberg & Sons began manufacturing shotguns starting about 1840 before moving upmarket eventually becoming known as Savage Arms]]])and others.)

In 1892, the Avon Machine Shop became one of the first businesses in town to sell firearms. It was located on State Route 22 and continued to do so until it closed in 1954. The shop was also a source for parts for many different guns, including revolvers and shotguns.

The Avon, Ohio area was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century. The first white settlers arrived in 1792, and by 1800, there were about 100 people living in the area. By 1812, the population had grown to 300 people, and by 1830, it had reached 600 people. In 1836, the village of Avon was established as a town within Scioto County. By 1870, the town had grown to 1,200 people and became a city in 1907. The city ofAvon was renamed Cleveland in 1920 after its incorporation into the United States. The city has since been renamed again multiple times including Dayton in 1945 and Lorain in 1959. The history of Avon began with early settler John Groteman. Groteman came to Ohio from Connecticut in 1792 and founded what is now known as Avon on a small stream near modern-day Mansfield Township. Groteman's initial land grant included 640 acres (270 hectares). He named his settlement "Avon", which he hoped would be an attractive name for a trading post on the Great Lakes region due to its location at an entrance point into those lakes from Canada. However, no one ever built a house or store atAvon and it only served as a summer home for local farmers during the warmer months In 1812, following annexation of Scioto County by Ohio Territory (), avon became part of that new county In 1836., following another annexation event,, avon passed through three changes: from Scioto County to Cleveland Township; from Cleveland Township to Lorain Township; then back again to Cleveland Township before becoming an independent village This process continued until 1870 when all but one township within Scioto County were consolidated under Cleveland City government . This consolidation led to growth for both cities: over time Cleveland grew larger than any other incorporated municipality east of Chicago while Avon tripled its population reaching 1,200 residents by 1907 Today much residue remains from early American life such as pioneer churches dating back to this period including two significant examples - Stroudsburg Methodist Church (1798) located on Main Street adjacent today’s State Fairgrounds complex where several exhibits are touring daily – Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church (1800) on Euclid Avenue also standing today just blocks away inside massive Park District Development project – these venerable structures provide valuable insight into early Cincinnati/Cleveland cultural history
