A sawmill was built around 1870 which continued to operate until 1959 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by changing industry preferences away from sawmills towards turbines for power generation purposes. A cotton gin followed suit about 1880 but ceased operations circa 1925 because of overuse of water which then became polluted as well as damaged by HurricaneFloods (1985). Avon, Ohio is a town in Carroll County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Avon in 1806 as a post office and trading post on the Cuyahoga River. It became a village in 1903 and an incorporated town in 1907. The townsite had been renamed by its first mayor after Amos Kendall who served as an delegate to the U.S. Congress from Ohio (1801-1803). Avon's location on the water gave it importance for fishing and trade, which led to its becoming known as "the Fishing Capital of the World". The community also developed mills that produced flour, cottonseed oil, paper products, boots and saddles, and other items such as clothing for local farmers and soldiers during World War II. In 1957 Avon ceased operations as a village but reverted to status as an incorporated town when annexation applications were received from neighboring unincorporated communities. In 1974 Avon voters approved annexation of neighbouring Defiance Township which had voted to secede from Cleveland over zoning changes that would have allowed retail stores within their boundaries
