In Avon, Ohio, there are a number of gun lights that have been in use for centuries. One of the earliest gun lights was invented by Captain John Cushing in 1795. Avon, Ohio is a small town in the southernmost corner of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 7,841 at the 2000 census and 8,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. The history of Avon dates back to 1811 when three brothers founded a farm on land that now includes much of Avon Township (formerly part of Montgomery County). The first settler in what is now Avon was Abram Payson who arrived in 1819 from British Canada. He initially built a log cabin near present-day Dublin and named it "Paysonville." In 1825, Aaron Smith moved to what is now Avon from Canandaigua with his family and began growing corn and wheat on his 640 acres (2 km²). He named his new community after himself, "Avon," because he had seen an article in a local newspaper about an estate being auctioned off in Cincinnati which included 4,000 acres (16 km²) of land east of downtown. By 1840, there were 100 residents living in Avon; by 1850, there were 400 residents. John Dickson opened a gristmill on Main Street in 1849; within two years he had expanded it into a flour mill which became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1861, avocados were brought overland from Mexico by wagonloads as part of President Abraham Lincoln's attempt to import more food for American soldiers during the American Civil War. In 1865, avocados were also introduced as an early agricultural crop into this country when they were grown by pioneers near Mansfield Heights south of Dayton along State Route 606/State Route 422 (now US 11/OHio State Route 422). By 1870 avocados had become such an important commodity that surpluses led to their first commercial production at Sayre & Wertheim’s “Winery store #1” on High Street just south of present-day Cuyahoga Falls Boulevard (). At this time advertisements for fresh avocados listed prices starting at $0.50 per dozen! Price adjustments continued until 1922 when parity between pricing throughout America caused recalls for unripe fruit to be issued throughout most major cities! Avon, Ohio is a small town in Stark County, Ohio. The population was 1,876 at the 2000 census. It is located on the border of Stark and Lucas counties. The township was organized in 1809 as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1811 it was renamed for John Avon, an American Revolutionary War general and delegate to the Continental Congress from Lancaster County. The name "Avon" may be derived from its location on Cana Road above a ravine which served as a natural defensive barrier against Indian attacks. In 1830, Avon became a village within the new county of Stark. In 1836 it incorporated as a city and by 1840 had reached its present size with a population of 2,000 people. In 1904 it amalgamated with other nearby towns to form the current town of Avon. The first settler in what is now Avon Township was George Washington Kemp who arrived there in 1790 while surveyor for the Western Reserve Company under General George Rogers Clark's command during his campaign for independence from Great Britain. He built his home on an tract near what is now Park Avenue and ran two sawmills and three gristmills until he acquired additional land in 1794 which he used to build his large farmstead known today as Kemp's Mills Rd., just east of modern day Park Avenue NW (just south of where US-40 intersects with I-270). During the late 1800s many wealthy residents from Cleveland moved into this area because of its fertile soil and easy access to transportation via horseback or wagon train roads available only through neighboring towns such as Painesville, Lorain, Cleveland Heights and Independence (now Akron). Many industries grew up around milk production including cheese making; papermaking; shoe manufacturing; coal mining; cattle raising; hog Farming etc.; eventually leading toAvon becoming one of America's most important commercial centers during this time period
Avon was incorporated as a village in 1868 and became a town in 1871. The first post office was established in Avon on July 1, 1868. In 1907, the town renamed itself to honor John C. Avon, who had been its mayor from 1865-1867
