The history of Avon can be traced back to 1824 when three families from Mayville Township - John Aiken (father), James Ritchie (brother) and Amos Wright - came to what was then known as "Saddleback Cove" on the Scioto River in present-day Avon Township. They named their new settlement after Anthony Owen, an Englishman who had settled in that area some time earlier. From this small beginnings growth continued as local farmers turned to growing corn, wheat and other crops while business ventures included tannery, livery stable and even a bakery in those early days; however it was not until 1886 that avons first post office opened its doors! In 1907 avons became an incorporated village with a single schoolhouse serving grades 1-6 along with a dispensary for health services; however due to increasingly rural surroundings Village officials decided against incorporation again until 1946 when they finally did so because of large population growth in neighboring towns! Avondale Farms located east of town began production of cheese in 1892 while anotherAVON Rubber factory began operationsin 1913; these were among many early businesses that led to what is now known as the "Avondale Towne". From 1916 through 1951 there were six different mayorships with Hiram Lodge being elected county president for all but one term during that time frame; however Lodge’s death interrupted any plans for continuing township government by fellow citizens who instead formed a “Governmental Committee” under his leadership which drafted an ordinance proposing incorporation into the new Hamilton County! The proposal eventually failed 4-1 but this didn’t stop residents from trying again just two years later when they passed a resolution asking for annexation into newly created Covington County! However once again annexation never happened because Covington County only received 2% of the total population during that decade compared to over 60% within present day Hamilton County! In 1957 Governor James Rhodes appointed avons first female mayor when her predecessor resigned after four terms due to health problems; however she served only two years before being succeeded by her husband Dick Rouse who also served two terms before retiring effective December 15th, 1960 citing feeling he had done enough work withinavons community despite having no experience running government! That same year saw AVON Rubber Company become world's second largest tire manufacturer thanks largely to its investment in technology developing new methods for making high quality rubber products using modern resources including coal gasification plants operated by United GasCorp.; however Gardner Welding co., successor company Norwood Manufacturing Corporation took over productionofAVON Tires throughout most of 1961 until ultimately Gardner's bankruptcy causedproduction interruptions at their facilities throughout 1962 leaving AVON with just 9 percent market share remaining following bankruptcy
