In 1853, avonais merged with other villages near Cleveland to form the town of Avon-iles-cum-Cleveland which had a population of 10,000 people. In 1871, Cleveland annexed all the towns composing what would become Butler County and incorporated as Avon Township No. 2 with a population of 25 residents. The first post office in town was established on May 12th, 1872; it operated under the name "Cleveland." In 1916–1917 during World War I when Cleveland's downtown was destroyed by fire—the only time an American city has been completely destroyed by fire—Avon erected a temporary wooden frame building known as “The Post Office” which served as an information center for military units quartered there from 1917 until its destruction two years later that same year during peacetime repairs to make way for new Government buildings which were finished just before Christmas Eve 1918 when again Coventry City burned down killing ninety five people including twenty one children who were playing inside) The building still stands today (Thanksgiving Day 2009) across from Euclid Avenue Armory

He and his family moved to the area from Newark, Delaware. In 1826, David Denton discovered coal near present-day Avon and began mining it. By 1830,Avon had a blacksmith shop and three stores. The first post office was established in 1832. In 1835, the name of the town was changed to Avon after Samuel Avons estate near Hartford Township in Delaware County. In 1840s-50s there were several waves of immigrants toAvon; Germans (mainly Hessean Jews), Irish Catholics (mostly from County Clare), Poles and other Eastern European citizens who arrived during the Great Famine of Ireland between 1840 and 1850. avon became an agricultural center with heavy use of irrigation water brought by canals built by pioneer farmers including John Hammond and others A school district was organized in 1902 with five schools: one for boys (Eastman School) on East Main Street west of downtown; one for girls (Westinghouse School) on North Third Street east of downtown; one for colored students (Negro High School) on First Avenue north of downtown; and one for Catholic children attending Slovakian Catholic Schools run by Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur located just east of town off Second Street ( these schools merged into Lincoln Elementary School District #2 which operates today as part of Cleveland Public Schools) In 1917 local government merger resulted in creation of Crawford County Board OF Education with seven members elected at large plus two members appointed by county commissioners
Avon was founded in 1824 as a small village on the banks of the Ohio River. It grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of 1,500. In 1836, Avon became an incorporated town, and in 1850 it merged with the neighboring village of Cincinnati. In 1863, Avon became one of the original ten towns in the new state of Ohio. In 1912, it was renamed Cleveland after its incorporation into Cleveland County. The city's first mayor was David W. Eddy and its first city councilmember was George Mifflin. The current mayor is Jens Erik Hagen
