In 1835, a post office was established here and by 1840 there were 12 stores and 6 taverns with a population of over 1,000 residents. In 1855, avocados began to be grown here for use in cooking; this led to the naming of one street after an avocado – Middle Road (now Elm Street). By 1865 there were 10 stores and 16 taverns with a population of 3,000 residents; however this number rapidly decreased due to numerous factors such as lack of agricultural production or economic depression that struck America during this time period – primarily throughout eastern Ohio including Avon Lake itself. By 1870 there only remained six businesses operating within avocados business district – all smallscale operations lasting less than two years before being closed or sold out by their owners due to competition from larger supermarkets or dairies that had opened up across central Ohio at this time also experiencing rapid growth thanks to advances in transportation methods like railroad construction which had made it possible for farmers to sell their produce much closer to consumers making it easier for them to make a living off their crops instead of having them transported long distances entire seasons). Avon Lake is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown–Warren–Marion metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Avon Lake was John Sikes who came overland from Canada in 1814. He named his land "Avon" after Bathsheba, a vassal queen of Assyria. Sikes built a cabin and started to grow corn and potatoes on his property. In 1824, he married Anna Hustedt, also from Canada. They farmed together for several years before moving to Medina Township in 1827 to start a family. Anna died in 1830 and John moved back to Avon Lake with their six children: Samuel (1829-1912), Mary (1830-1920), Levi (1831-1902), George (1833-1905), Harriet (1835-1910) andJohn Jr.(1838-1900). In 1840s two other families arrived - the Lamberts and the Ketts - followed by others during the next few decades including many Irish refugees who had come overland through Philadelphia during the 1840s famine. The early settlers were primarily farmers with subsistence farming practices that reliance on rainfall may have limited production but they were able to build up an adequate infrastructure such as churches, schools and roads which remain extant today including Route 27 running through town center
Avon Lake was founded by the Avon family in 1795. The dam on the Shiawassee River was built in 1892 to provide irrigation water for the town of Avon and surrounding agricultural areas. In 1925, the town of Avon merged with the city of Dayton to form a single municipality. In 1990, Dayton dissolved its municipalities and Avon Lake became an unincorporated community within the city of Dayton.
