Avon Lake is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,462 at the 2010 census. At one time it was part of the Flint–Warren–Dearborn metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Avon Lake were French fur traders in the late 17th century. They named it "Lac du lac" because there was a small body of water called Lac de la Forêt (Lake of the Woods) nearby. The first permanent residents were Dutch settlers who arrived around 1800. In 1825, General Nicholas Wayne and his army invaded Canada and burned down some villages along the Great Lakes as part of their campaign against Native Americans. In retaliation, the Crown sent an army under Lieutenant Governor David Dixon to burn down much of Detroit during operations called "The Great Rebellion." The natives had also looted and burned many other settlements in what is now Muskegon County during that period. Dixon's army reached Avon Lake on July 22, 1825, after traveling for several days on foot over difficult terrain covered with snow drifts high enough to cover a horse or team of oxen. He ordered his men not to stop for lunch but to proceed directly to the camp at Lac du lac where they would spend the night before continuing their march tomorrow morning. As they prepared for their attack, they heardaroas singing from above and soon discovered that there were plenty of fish in the lake! After dinner that evening, they began their assault upon what must have been an unprepared Indian camp! Someitans killed or wounded more than 50 Indians and took prisoner about 120 warriors including leaders Burchardt and Deering; these captives later became known as "the Black Heroes." At dawn on July 23rd 1825 General Wayne's forces attacked again from two directions without awaiting orders from Commander Dixon-nor did they take into account reports by some local scouts that several thousand Indians had already fled across Canada border into Ontario! This third attack resulted in even more casualties among both American soldiers and Indian survivors-over 60 dead outright plus dozens more injured or captured which made escape very difficult if not impossible! Nearly all prisoners taken this time were beheaded due to lack of alternatives! A few hours later Commodore John D'Alembert arrived ashore with reinforcements bringing total number on board USS Constitution (1794) up to 800 men including 37 artillery pieces! Unfortunately for Michiganians Dodgey's Creek opened up just south of them near present day Cadillac & Grand Rapids Avenue creating perfect flooding conditions enabling alligator/gazelle/iguana crossings while unloading boats filled with goods!. Although Commodore D'Alembert managed to keep most boats afloat he lost six outof eight guns when heavy rains produced high waves which prevented him from landing any troops!) Onboard Constitution lay Lt.-Governor Dixon (whose forces included 300 musketeers), Captains Simcoe (commanding HMS Foudre) Clinton Hume(commanding HMS Vengeance), James Watson(HMS Donnington), Samuel Woodward(HMS Maryland), George Ligonier(Lieutenant Colonel commanding militia unit 2nd Michigan regiment) Edward Coles(Captaincy duties connected with Fort Dearborn). There was also one midshipman aboard Constitution: Timothy Pickering.(See appendix G.)
