The first settler in what is now Avon Lake were two men from Pennsylvania who named their land "Lake Erie." One man, James Kempton, died in 1802 while exploring the area and his body was never found. A second man, George Hinkleman settled on land east of present-day Avon Lake in 1806 and laid out a townsite on the remains of Kempton's farmstead. He also built a mill which still stands today along with several other buildings including a Methodist church and one house that has been preserved as part of the Historic Anderson Museum complex located within walking distance of downtownAvon Lake. The original town site was about 2 miles wide by 3 miles long with a total population of around 100 people. There were no roads or schools until after 1840 when an Act to create township status for Butler County was passed by the General Assembly. On July 8th of that year James Fenton opened up what is now known as Main Street (later renamed State Road 4) into what had been developed as small country roundabout just north of wherepresent-dayAvon Lake sits today. By 1860 there were only 10 residents living near Main Street and most residents either worked at local farms or took care of livestock on their own properties outside town limits; services such as drinking water and telephone service would not be available until much later in the century. In 1881 Avon Lake had a post office and five stores; growth continued during this period with numerous construction projects taking place throughout town including two churches (one Methodist), three schools (including one high school), six Masonic lodges, four gristmills/meal mills (three operated by farmers themselves and one operated by J C Potter & Son coal merchants), seven physician’s offices (two gynecologists and three psychiatrists), twenty-six businesses listed on its business directory between 1901-1963 inclusive – many more if you include taverns/pubs which did not fall under “commerce” but instead functioned purely as places to drink alcohol – fifteen residences plus outbuildings such as barns/outhouses etc., sixteen lots owned outright or leased from others while another six were purchased through purchase agreements entered into subsequent decades; these included three parcels bordering present day University Heights neighborhood off SR 4 where an early Adventist church building once stood before it was torn down in 1984 following years of neglect (). A new courthouse was erected on Broadway Avenue between Park Avenue southward to provide space for district courtrooms for all Greene County except Westland; this building served from 1893 until 1907 when it burned down after becoming overwhelmed with traffic due to heavy judicial proceedings being held there daily (). The old courthouse eventually became used for storage purposes before being demolished completely in 1970 ().
