Avon Lake is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,907 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated community of New Brighton is located in Avon Lake. The first European to visit what is now Avon Lake was Nicholas-Jacques Marquette on his voyage from Quebec to Detroit in 1692. He named it "Lake Erie" after the Erie Canal he saw on his journey and traded goods with the local Potawatomi people there. In 1814, John Frederick Taylor founded a small community called Mayfield near present-day Avon Lake because that's where he had seen anIndian village used as a summer home by British officers quartered there during the War of 1812. After Taylor's death in 1825, Mayfield became abandoned and fell into disrepair until it was reactivated as aQuaker Meeting House in 1827 and again as an agricultural settlement in 1840 by Rev. Elias Hagedorn of Scranton Township (now Warren County). In 1865, avoider George Stephenson built a cottage here for himself on his Stephenson Falls estate just upstream from today's town line. It stood until 1937 when it burned down while being rebuilt following damage caused by heavy rainsianthe year before. A new cottage was erected on the site and it still stands today - this time used as offices for the Avon Lake Chamber of Commerce The post office at present-day Avon Lake opened on July 1, 1850 under provisional name of "Mayfield." Avon Lake was a small, fast-flowing stream located in the town of Avon Lake, Ohio. The community was founded by Rev. John A. MacKay in 1853 and named for John Avon, an Englishman who had been a missionary to the area earlier that year. The original post office was established at Avon Lake in 1854, and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. The village developed around the Post Office Square and other local businesses, including a sawmill, gristmill, bakery, grocery store,and two churches. In 1896 the town became part of the new United States County of Holmes. The town lost its status as a community when it merged with neighboring Chillicothe into the larger city of Chillicothe on May 1, 1907. However, due to its strategic location withinlying rural areas and its close proximity to several major cities along Interstate 81 (including Dayton),Avon Lake retains some vestiges of its former identity as a small farming community which enjoyed significant economic activity during the early 20th century.
The Avon Lake area was first settled by the Erie Canal Company in 1800. The company built a canal from the Great Lakes to provide transportation for goods and people. The area became known as the "Canal Town." In 1825, the Ohio General Assembly passed a bill that designatedAvon Lake as a town in Wayne County. On July 1, 1827,Avon Lake became a part of the newly created Athens-Clarke County. In 1868, Athens-Clarke County was divided into two parts: Athens County to the east and Clarke County to the west. Avon Lake remained part of Clarke County until it was annexed into AthensCounty on February 1, 1907.
