Avon Lake was founded in 1834 by Captain John Avon and his family. The first store on the site opened in 1835. In 1846, Colonel George Simpson donated land to the town for a school and park. The townspeople built a dam in 1850 to create Avon Lake. The community grew rapidly, and by 1870, there were over 100 residents. In 1892, the town annexed neighboring Quinnsville. In 1918, the United States acquired control of military installations at Avon Lake; as a result, many of thetown's businesses closed down or changed hands. In 1962, Avon Lake merged with nearby Mansfield Township to form one large municipality.
