Avon Lake is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Avon Lake were British subjects who arrived in 1788 and named it after an estate they had seen on their trip to Canada. In 1813, George Stephenson built a canal from Liverpool to Akron and renamed it "Avon" after his hometown of Avon-in-the-Woods, England. In 1836, he donated land to the town for a public square and water tower. The original village center was located on what is now Worthy Avenue between Main Street and State Route 806 (the present day Park Drive).During the early 20th century, industry dominated the economy of Avon Lake and its surrounding townships; however, with development of nearby suburbs such as Euclid Heights and Mayfield Heights during the late 20th century,Avon Lake has regained some prominence as a bedroom community for Cleveland metropolitan area residents. In 1898 avonshire coalfields opened up around avonshiretownsend which led to increased industrial production there also started new schools like Community High School which merged with Maplewood Elementary School in 1922 The first post office was established atavonshire in 1814
