The history of magazines in Avon Lake, Ohio dates back to the early 1800s. The first magazine in Avon Lake was established by a group of men who were interested in firearms. They built a store on Canfield Street and began selling pistols, shotguns, and rifles. In 1823, they founded the Avon Lake Rifle Club and soon after, began publishing the local newspaper, theAvon Lake Observer. By 1830, there were several magazines in town and it had become an important center for gun enthusiasts across the Ohio River region. The publication continued to be published until 1883 when it merged with another paper to form the Cleveland Gazette. The first issue of the Gazette was published on October 3rd of that year. It is interesting to note that this was only two weeks after President James Kahl’s assassination which left many people searching for ways to keep their weapons safe during his funeral procession. Many different types of firearms were sold from these magazines over the years including pistols (including both American and European models), shotguns, rifles (including both personal guns and cannon-powered rifles), cannons, handguns, ammunition supplies, sheet music accompaniment for pistol shooting competitions, as well as information on rifle club meetings and other firearm-related events. In addition to its print edition and online presence at www.avonglobeobserver.com/gazette/, the Gazette also produced a weekly electronic edition which was available free at many libraries throughout central Ohio starting in 1978.

Avon Lake is a small town in northern Ohio, located on the border of Westmoreland and Delaware counties. It was founded in 1824 by John Avon and his wife, Sarah. The community grew rapidly after being surveyed for a local post office in 1827. By 1830, Avon Lake had a population of 350 people. In 1834, the town became the seat of government for both Delaware County and Westmoreland County. In 1840, Avon Lake was renamed to honor Commodore James K. Polk during the Mexican–American War. As part of the Great Lakes region,Avon Lake served as an important port on the Erie Canal linking New York City with Buffalo and Detroit. In 1913,Avon Lake merged with nearby 35 other towns to form Avon Township in Delaware County. The township's first mayor was Abram Hassell (1873-1913).
In 1802, the area that is now Avon Lake was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1803, the Northwest Territory was divided into two parts, the Ohio Territory and Indiana Territory. The Ohio Territory included what is now Avon Lake and part of present-day Lucas County. The Indiana Territory includes what is now Paulding County and much of present-day Delaware County. On July 6, 1806, Congress created a new state called Michigan out of parts of both the Ohio and Indiana Territories. Michigan was named for General James K. Wilson, who had fought in the Mexican War and then served as governor of Wisconsin.
