The first use of a lighted gun in Avon Lake, Ohio was on November 18, 1835 when Father John B. O’Brien used a muzzleloader to shoot at a turkey. The first firearms to be used for hunting were pistols and rifles. There were no lights or lasers available at that time so hunters had to rely on their eyes and fingers to aim their weapons. Before the early 20th century it was not uncommon for hunters to travel long distances with only one or two sets of eyesight while using an unlighted musket as their main weapon. In 1866, AVON LAKE GUN LIGHTS were installed in the town square by the town fathers in order to help guide hunter’s along open trails during the dark hours of night. At this time there was still no easy way for farmers and other local residents to see game coming down the valley so shooting with any kind of light source was critical in successful hunts. In 1875, James Ewing erected the world’s first electric lightbulb which he placed in his home near the post office in order to attract deer hunters who would then use his property as their hunting ground during election season. This innovative technology allowed people living outside of town access to quality target practice without having them disturbed by rifle shot from neighboring homes

In 1825, a group of men from Avon Lake formed the first volunteer fire department in town. The department continued to be active until 1905 when it merged with the city's police force.
Avon Lake is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern shore of the Cuyahoga River and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The avon name comes from an Indiana stream that flows through the town. The first European to visit Avon Lake was Nicholas-Jacques De Bourgogne on November 10, 1795. He named it for George Washington's estates in Virginia near Alexandria, Virginia. In 1801, John Couch built a log cabin here and started farming this land. In 1814, he married Esther (née Phelps) and raised five children here; one daughter became a missionary in China and two sons became farmers themselves. In 1829, Alfred Vail opened his toll road from Elyria to Akron with connections to other roads in what is now Trumbull County. This allowed people to get goods quickly and cheaply to markets all over Ohio and Kentucky as well as Illinois and Missouri. In 1830s/40s various businesses were started or enlarged around Avon Lake including grist milling by Jens Kromer & Sons (1835), wagon manufacturing by John Couch (1836), chicken coop construction by Amos Safford (1839), post office (1841), flour mill (1843–48), cheese factory (1849–52), bakery (1912) and sawmill(1915). On July 8th 1840 while local resident Michael Hannon was taking a walk along the Cuyahoga River he met General Winfield Scott who told him about his plans for Fort Wayne in present day Indiana just south of Cleveland on its confluence with the Maumee River which would be an important border fortification against encroachments from Kentucky during the American Civil War. On September 12th 1840 Hannon laid out some stakes for a store at present day Avon Lake after conferring with locals Amos Safford & James Dolan about building such an establishment there since they had become interested in trade with easterners coming downriver via their Erie Canal route from Western Pennsylvania looking for new land opportunities west of Cincinnati due to increasing demands made by Ulysses S Grant following victory over Stephen A Harrison at Perryville Creek near Cincinnati on October 9th 1840 The store failed but another store soon followed on December 1st 1840 called "Hannon's Store" located just north of center across street from today's intersection of State Routes 422 & 422A

It was founded in 1824 by John Avon and his family as a farmstead on the north shore of Avon Lake. The name "Avon" comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where fish abound." The first store in the town opened in 1827. By 1840, it had become a busy center for trade and commerce on the north shore of the lake. In 1851, avocados started to be grown here and became an important cash crop for the town. From 1865 to 1870, avocados were also being grown commercially on nearby farms around Avon Lake. In 1936, avocados were made illegal in Ohio because of their high CA levels; however, they continue to be grown here today as a local economic development strategy for the town
