Avon Lake is a small town in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Avon Hill, an early settler. The first European to visit what is now Avon Lake was John Ledward in 1688 when he and his party of 10 men explored the area as part of their exploration of the Great Lakes region. In 1792 British explorer George Washington journeyed through this area and named it for him, Avon Hill being located just east of present day Avon Lake on what became known as the Washington Purchase lands. Avon Lake was settled by Ukrainians in 1812 who began to plow and farm land around what is now its central square mile. A post office called "Avon" was established in 1814 and remained in operation until 1905. In 1836 US President James Kieft chartered the village of Greenville (later renamed Youngstown) along with six other villages within Defiance County on account of his desire to create a new township to be patterned after New York's Westchester Township which he had recently acquired from Spain via purchase from Anthony Wayne. The first resident surveyor for Greenville was Elijah Butterfield who started surveying land there on October 1, 1837; however no buildings were built until 1840 due to difficulties encountered during construction attempts due to frozen ground caused by heavy snowfall at that time near Cleveland Heights outside then Defiance County limits). In 1870 when Greenville effectively incorporated as a village it appointing Curley Ewing its first mayor with Samuel Payson serving as treasurer/managerial head). This growth continued through the years into the 1960s when it attained its current population size with 21,000 residents In recent years there have been efforts to revitalize downtown AvONLake including construction of new office buildings along with development of new neighborhoods within its boundaries including: North Oaks/Bethlehem Heights/Lakewood Village; South Oaks/Canton Landing; East Side Manor; Willowbrook Terrace On October 20th 2016 voters elected Mayor Teresa Mosqueda who will serve out her term through 2020
