By 1830, Gregg's Mill had become one of several mills located around this corner in what is now central Butler County. In 1836, George Stephenson built the first steam locomotive for transportation inside of Ohio and raised money for its construction through selling tickets to passengers riding on its Pullman cars. This event helped start railroad development in Ohio and led toAvon becoming an incorporated town on December 15, 1922 based upon concepts advanced by Drury College professor Cyrus McCormick Meadowlark who had traveled with Stephenson during hisrailroad trip from Cincinnati to Cleveland

Avon Lake was founded in 1836 by Captain John Avon, a United States brigadier general. The original mill on the site opened in 1841. The town of Avon Lake was chartered in 1871. In 1907, the first electric streetcar line ran through Avon Lake.
