The first firearms were made in Avon Lake, Ohio in the 1840s. The area was called the "Gun Belt" because of the many gunsmiths and farmers who lived there. In 1851, a store named Smith & Wesson opened in Avon Lake and began selling firearms. In 1853, a rifle company was founded by William H Rogers and it became known as the "Rogers Rifle Company."
Avon Lake is a small town in central Ohio, located on the banks of the Green River. The population was 1,534 at the 2000 census. The first European to set eyes on what would become Avon Lake was Captain John Smith in 1608 when he explored the area for trade with the French. By 1800, Avon Lake had a population of only fifty-six people and was considered an agricultural village. In 1814, General George Washington's army encampment passed through Avon Lake while en route to battle at Fallen Timbers and many of his officers were given shelter by local farmers in their barns and outbuildings until they could find lodgings elsewhere. A post office called "Avon" was established in 1826, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1828, Congress created Zionsville Township from part of Lucas County. In 1840, parts of Lucas County were annexed by Avon Township; this included the town of Kirtland and all itslying villages including AVON LAKE. The township has since been reduced to its present size as a result ofzonation changes throughout most of Ohio during the 20th century.

Avon Lake is a town in Sandusky County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sandusky County. The name is from an English place name meaning "valley of Avon." The first European to visit what would become Avon Lake was Captain John Smith in 1679. He and his party were exploring the Great Lakes when they encountered theキャロット川 on their way back to Kingston, Ontario after visiting that area. In 1824, Josephine (née Weir) and her husband George Washington Vaughan acquired 1/2 mile (3 km) of land south of present-day Avon Lake from Colonel John Gregg for $1,000 cash. They named their property Duck Pond because it lay near where ducks nested during the early 1800s. In 1834 they sold their land to Isaac Dunham for $6,250 more than they had paid for it three years earlier! Duck Pond became a community center when residents built a school and store there in 1835. After duck hunting season ended in 1840 due to restrictions placed by Congress on possession of firearms by Americans during this time period, many settlers brought pistols over to hunt deer at Duck Pond instead which led to its current name: "Avon" by choice of residents as there was no other place nearby with that name! A post office called Duck Pond was established in 1836 but closed operation in 1838 because mail arrived too often from Cincinnati via boat along the now abandoned Canal de Presque Isle! The first settler to live permanently within what would become Avon Lake was Isaac Dunham who purchased additional acreage adjacent to Duck Pond on November 10th, 1840 from Daniel Whitehead for $5 per acre ($40 total). On April 3rd 1850 he married Mary Warner at Goose Hollow Methodist Church just east of present day Duck Pond while she still wore a dress made out of white calico! Mrs Warner's dress has been exhibited at various events around town ever since including being displayed at Trumbull County Museum starting in May 2017! On October 20th 1865 Union General Cincinnatus Johnson died suddenly nearpresent day Avon Lake while scouting operations near Perrysburg Ohio & soon afterwards his bodyguard Lt Col William Jealous took command of Johnson's forces stationed here guarding against possible Confederate incursions into central Ohio under Brigadier Generals Andrew Jackson & Winfield Scott Hancock
