Avon Lake is a community in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,740 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Avon Lake was James Buhlman. He and his family emigrated to America from Austria in 1815. They went to Lancaster County and platted what would become Avon Lake on land they had acquired from the Shawnee Nation. In 1824, Drury and others purchased the original patent for what are now town limits of Avon Lake from James Buhlman's heirs. In 1836, John Fenton organized a group of farmers to purchase 3/8 mile (1 km) east of present day Avon Lake on high ground that became known as Fenton's Ridge. This area became known as Fenton Township because it was here that the first school was built: an academy which served grades 7-12 until 1861 when it moved to neighboring Uniontown Township. In 1875, John Dickey bought 104 acres (41 ha) southwest of present day Avon Lake from Henry Huggins for $10 per acre (3 per hectare). This land became known as Dickey'sown Valley or simply Dickey Valley due to its isolation from other parts of Muskingum County at that time. As early as 1870s there were attempts by several private individuals to develop this valley into a city or resort town with plans including one by Jno Sayers that failed due to lack of interest; however City Hall Reports indicate there were many meetings and presentations about developing this area even before this failure Dickey began acquiring additional property east of present day Avon Lake starting with an acreage block he owned adjacent to his home on Canfield Road in 1880 which eventually included all present day township boundaries northward including much of today's northeast corner near Canton Airport . On July 25th 1889 he donated 122 acres (49 ha) northwest ofpresentdayAvondaleVillage(nowAvondaleMunicipality)tothe townshipsofCanfieldandLancasterforan agricultural college called The Ohio State Normal School (). The school opened September 15th 1890 and education continued until 1915 when it merged with Case Institute College in Cleveland , becoming Case Western Reserve University . By 1925 enrollment had reached 2,500 students and the school closed down due primarily to budget cuts but reopened briefly in 1933 as Cleveland State Teachers' College before closing again in 1935 A post office was established atAvondale Village on November 16th 1884 under name "Canfield" after Joseph Canfield who donated land for it . It remained open until December 12th 1907 when it changed its name back to "Avondale". A new post office building was constructed at 213 W Washington St., located across street from current site Ofcrafters Warehouse & Development Inc., which still stands today The first store opened at 200 N Main Street on October 21st 1886 by George Wernick & Bros.. Two more stores opened shortly afterwards: Wernick & SonsHardware Store at 214 N Main Street on October 24th 1886 and Emshoff & Myers Mercantile Coopatation Store at 227 N Main Street on November 1st 1886 also operated by Wernick & Sons Hardware Store . Both stores closed within two months because demand for goods increased along with development around town caused by opening of local mills Race Point Paper Mill #1(opened April 1865), Crystal Mine #2(openedMay 1865), Coventry Glass Factory #3(opened June 1865), Pigeons Forge Coal Yard #4(openedJuly 1865), Erie Railroad Depot No.(OpenedSeptember 1865). By 1840, the town had a population of about 100 people. In 1852, the borough of Avon Lake merged with the village of Eastlake to form the city of Avon Lake. The city was renamed Cleveland in 1868 after president Ulysses S. Grant's visit to that city during the American Civil War.
