This led to increased traffic on the lake which caused some residents to move from their original locations and create new settlements on or nearAvon Lake. One such settlement was established by Isaac Farnsworth when he purchased some land east ofpresent dayAvonLake from Daniel Boone in 1827. Farnsworth renamed his new community "Farnsworth" after himself and his wife Sarah Jane French (died 1850). By 1830,AvonLake had become so crowded with settlers that it became necessary to issue permits for people to build homes; this led tothe establishment ofthe first zoning ordinance inMuskingum County. In 1834, Major General John Gregg attachedto Ulysses S Grant's army during the Battle of Fallen Timbers and arrived atAvonLake with his personal horse team just before dark; this story has been recounted many times since then as part of local history education programs across Muskingum County. In 1840, Jonas Noyes built a mill dam acrossfrom present dayAvionlakeandnamed itNoyes Dam after himself andhis son Nathan Noyes (1824-1905). By 1865,Noyes Dam had been destroyed by flooding but its remains still visible downstream fromavionlake today. During World War II, materials used by American industries such as aircraft production were stockpiled atJohn Fritsch Air Force Base on adjoiningagoing field within milesofAvondale where they were burned off for release intothe open air during wartime emergencies called "blackouts". This fire also damaged partsofthe church located behindFritsch AFB which still stands today; however no damage resulted from the blackouts themselves
