Avon Lake is a community in the town of Avon, Ohio, United States. The community was founded in 1827 by residents of the town of Cuyahoga Falls. The name "Avon" comes from an Indian word meaning "bargain." The first post office at Avon Lake was established in 1828. In 1837, the town of Avon merged with the village of Niles to form the new city of Niles-Avon. The City Council decided to change the name to Avon Lake because it sounded more like a place than Cuyahoga Falls did. In 1915, a dam was built on the north side of Avon Lake and water began flowing into it from two separate sources. This created what is now known as Park Ave., which runs along both banks of the lake. It became a commercial center for avocados and other crops until World War II when steel production took over and development stopped. The last resident to leave Niles-Avon died in 1984. Today, there are only a few scattered homes left standing in what once were many vibrant neighborhoods around Avondale Rd., Park Ave., and south Tryck Road (the original location for much shopping).
Avon Lake was named for the AVON River, which flowed through the town. The first settlement in the area was on the banks of the river, and a post office was established there in 1821. Avon Lake became a village in 1846 and a city in 1912. It is now a suburb of Cleveland.
