He and his wife Hetty built a log cabin on what is now State Route 8 near present day Avon Park. In 1814, John Marshall founded two other small towns nearby – Waverly and Medina – both of which were named after British military commanders who had fought during the War of 1812. Avon Lake's growth began when the Erie Canal arrived in1825 and made it possible to ship goods all over Ohio without having to go through Buffalo or Cincinnati. This new industry led to an increase in employment and prices for goods grown so much that by 1830, avonslake had become one of the most prosperous communities in Trumbull County." In 1840, avonslake became one of only two communities west of Cincinnati that did not experience any violence from Native Americans during the American Indian Wars (the other being Sandusky). Despite this peace time, business started to dwindle during the late 1800s due to increasing competition from larger cities such as Cleveland and Buffalo. However, things changed around 1910 with World War I and changes in transportation technology that combined with economic prosperity brought about a resurgence in business activity around Avon Lake." Avon Lake is a small town in the northern part of Ohio. The community was founded in 1836 by Major General James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah Bellefontaine Polk. The Avon Lake area was first settled by the Chippewa Nation in the late 1800s. In 1825, a group of English colonists arrived in what is now Ohio and founded a town called Xenia on the Scioto River. Xenia quickly became an important fur- trader and transportation center due to its location at the mouth of the river. The town declined after 1793 when British troops burned down part of it in retaliation for French raids into British territory. The town was finally abandoned in 1845 when alluvial deposits made farming difficult and transportation impractical. A post office was established at Xenia in 1847, but it closed several years later because of low population growth rates. A small community named Avon Lake began to grow around the post office, but it too failed to gain much attention until 1865 when territorial officials renamed it after General John Custer who had died during the American Civil War.Avon Lake grew slowly until 1870, when a canal was built connecting Xenia with Toledo district. This development led to increased trade among settlers and businesses withinAvon Lake began to thrive as commercial businesses developed and people started using Avon Lake for fishing, boating, donkey cart racing, country fairs, and other activities. After World War II ended, AvonLake experienced rapid growth due to new industrial development along the Scioto River valley. Many new homes were built on large tracts of land that had been previously undeveloped or unused by civilians or government officials fearful of potential environmental damage from factory production schemes nearby. However, these developments also created significant social problems as larger families required more space than could be provided by average citizens and many residents unable or unwilling to leave their comfortable lifestyles behind for what seemed like an uncertain future
