Aurora is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Holmes County. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. It is located in southwestern Ohio on the Miami River, about 26 miles (41 km) west of Columbus and 15 miles (24 km) east of Dayton. Aurora is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. The settlement that became Aurora was founded by Myles Dickenson in 1796 as Dickensonstown, after his father-in-law's landing there from Maryland on July 4, 1795. The town was renamed Aurora in 1802 after John Custer's fatal battle with Indians near present-day Akron; Custer had been living in nearby Mentor at the time he fought at Little Big Horn and died while leading a cavalry detachment to pursue Apache warriors led by José María Escobar on July 24, 1876. In 1835, Elyria Township was organized out of parts of Holmes County including what is now Aurora; it became an independent municipality in 1847 when Holmes County was divided into two districts for political economy reasons – one based on land values and another based on population size. By 1830, when Erie Canal construction began eastward from Toledo along the Miami River, rich agricultural land lay between Aurora Heights to the south and Beechwood Hills to the north; settlers arrived from upstate New York and Pennsylvania to establish small villages around Canandaigua Harbor before canal construction made this area unusable for farming or other purposes until well into the 19th century. Aurora first saw rapid growth following its incorporation as a municipality on August 7, 1850: its population increased from 1 to 30 residents within five years!
