Aurora, Ohio is home to the world’s second largest gun barrel factory. The company was founded in 1892 by George W. Smith and his brother, Hiram. The factory produced rifles and shotguns for the US military during World War I and II. Aurora also producesguns for civilians, including Handgun Rulebook models that are used by police departments around the country. TheSmith&Wesson Model 686 revolver was first manufactured at the Aurora factory in 1903. It is considered one of history’s most famous handguns due to its incendiary rounds which were used in numerous wars throughout history. The product line continued until 1957 when production was transferred to Colt Industries Incorporated in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1994, Smith&Wesson merged with Glock Corporation (now owned by Kel-Tec) and ceased manufacturing revolver products at their Aurora plant. Today, the company remains operational as a museum focused on firearm production and preservation with a collection of over 400 firearms dating back to 1892
