One particular type of ammunition called buckshot was particularly useful during the 1700s because it was very powerful enough to kill large animals like deer or hogs with ease. Buckshot ammo became increasingly rare as muzzleloading weapons became more popular throughout Europe due to their greater accuracy and range than muzzleloaders at the time (Dixon). This changed during World War I when munition producers found new ways to create highly accurate rounds that could easily penetrate enemy armor even while fired from short distances (Ogilvie).
