A new courthouse was built on State Route 8 north of downtown Athens in 1827 and became known as "the Capitol." That building served as both courthouse and town hall until it burned down in 1870. The town of Athens emerged as a vibrant commercial center after 1800 with heavy shipbuilding activity along the Scioto River. As shipping declined during the Civil War, businesses moved to Cincinnati or other nearby cities; however, Athenians continued to thrive due to their agricultural production and commerce. By 1920, most manufacturing had ceased and Athenians were largely self-sufficient; however, they continue to maintain an active local economy through tourism and other services such as education and cultural events. During World War II, many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany; some even volunteered; but most Athenians surrendered when Japan invaded Pearl Harbor on December 6th 1941. Shortly thereafter efforts began to relocate all military personnel from Columbus into centralOhio so that they might be unavailable for combat duty; this plan failed because too few people wanted to leave their homesickness behind them With war over came difficult times for many small towns across America following the Great Depression which led many people back into agriculture or industry . However , Athenians persevered through tough economic times while others abandoned their communities altogether In 1957 voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Cleveland which happened without incident After years of growth ( involving annexations by Toledo (1962),akers Grove (1970), Covington (1980), Bear Lake (1993)), significant infrastructure projects including better schools funding & more jobs have finally made Athenian streets safe for drivers & pedestrians again!
