He reported that he found a great many good fishing spots around hereabouts and granted land to Chief Menominee for his use as a hunting ground adjoining his own village of Miami on Canright Road east of present day University Avenue (now US 10). A few years later another Englishman, Robert De Witt claimed land northeast of present-day University Avenue also for himself but this claim was never ratified by Great Britain because De Witt had no title to it beyond that which he derived from his marriage to an Indian princess! In 1701 France ceded all her western lands including Athens Township west of Canal Fulton Road (now US 20) to England as part of the Treaty Of Paris following their defeat at Saratoga; thus beginning American control over much of central Ohio George Washington visited Athens while campaigning against British forces during the French and Indian War in 1754; he noted its strategic location midway between Cincinnati and Philadelphia along canals routes providing easy passage through hostile territory In 1802, Athens became known as Battle Creek due to some skirmishes fought nearby between United States Army troops under General David Hunter's command and Native Americans led by Chief Wabash The City Council authorized construction of a new courthouse in 1811 which served until 1832 when plans were made for more spacious quarters within government buildings located on High Street The October 1862 Battle Between Union Troops And Confederate Veterans At Third Street And Vine Streets resulted in several injuries among civilians with single gunshot wounds being particularly common; resulting in Congress passing legislation authorizing military hospitals be built throughout America The opening ceremonies for Franklin D Roosevelt's inauguration took place at Freedom Hall on May 6, 1933 On November 3, 1907 a fire destroyed most or all of downtown Athens with extensive damage done to businesses including one called "the Cotton Exchange" which still stands today
