In the early 1800s, Athens, Ohio was a small town with a population of about 1,500. It was located on the Scioto River and had a few businesses and residences. The first holster manufacturer in Athens was John D. Madden who started making holsters in 1824. In 1868, Wm. Hodge created the first self-contained holster for revolvers in America. In 1903, Athens became an incorporated city and began to produce its own holsters as part of city ordinances. The Holster Mfg Co., Incorporated continued to make holsters from 1903 until it closed in 1967. During that time period, they produced over 100 different types of holsters for handguns and revolvers including some which are still being manufactured today.

The origin of the Athens holster can be traced back to 1883 when a store owner in Athens, Ohio, decided to sell holsters. At that time, holsters were not commonly worn outside of law enforcement and military settings. The first Holster Shop in Athens was founded by three friends who pooled their money to purchase two holsters each from an unknown source. After learning about the benefits of holster ownership, these friends began selling holsters door-to-door. By 1907, the first Athens holster company had been established and was doing business as The Pistol Shop. In 1913, The Pistol Shop changed its name to Harrington & RichardsonHolster Manufacturing Company (H&R). H&R became one of the largest leather companies in America and continued to manufacture high quality handguns until it merged with Colt Firearms Corporation in 1968.
Athens, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the capital of Athens County. The population was 14,871 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-most populous city in Ohio and one of its ten largest cities by population. It is also home to University of Toledo and Western Reserve University. The first people who lived in what is now Athens were the Lenape Indians who inhabited what is now eastern Stark County until ceded by France in 1763 as part of Treaty #13 with Great Britain. In 1802, when Ohio became a United States Territory, Athens was chosen as its capital due to its location on high ground between Cincinnati and Toledo, which made it an ideal site for a new federal government center. The cornerstone for the Capitol Building was laid on July 4, 1803 by President James K. Polk with assistance from Mayor George Hennepin and other civic leaders including Representative Caleb Cushing (later Governor) and Jens Ludwig (a member of Congress from Cincinnati). The building opened on October 1, 1810 and served as both the national legislative chamber for five years before being moved to Washington D.C., where it remained until 1865 when it returned to Athens under President Andrew Johnson after Lincoln's assassination while he was still president. During World War II, much activity took place within central Athens because over 80% of America's munitions were fabricated there at Lucas Boot & Supply Company which had been founded in 1918 by John Leland Lucas and his son Robert Burdick Lucas Jr.. After World War II ended came a time when downtown businesses died out as technology advanced; however some successful businesses such as JBS Food Holdings did move into downtown areas such as First National Bank Tower vacated their old locations along Third Street west of High Streets southwesterly boundary prior to redevelopment that began in earnest following enactment of City Council Resolution No 2-1988 authorizing demolition/renovation plans for those buildings along that boundaries In recent years several large developers have come forward to purchase or redevelop properties adjacent to First National Bank Tower along Third Street west of High Streets southwesterly boundary - thus creating mixed use residential/commercial/industrial developments with office space on one side and residences/downtown shops/restaurants on another side - this has resulted in increased traffic congestion around First National Bank Tower during peak hours

Anoka County, Minnesota was organized on February 14, 1858. The first settler in Athens was John Leland, who arrived in 1859. In 1865, the town of Athens was platted and named for Athens, Ohio. The first post office operated in Athens from 1865 to 1868.
