Athanasia is a small town in Athens, Ohio. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Newburgh-Muncie, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Athens was Nicholas Hixon in 1811. In 1815, a group of people from Delaware County founded the Village of Athens on land that they had bought from the Wyandot Indians. The first school was opened in 1821 and it was called "Hixon's School." In 1827, Athens voted to become an independent village and a post office was established for it. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as community center. In 1830, John King became the first white person to purchase land east of Lima on which Athens would grow up. He built the first sawmill and gristmill in Athens Township and named his plantation Ohio Mills after his home state ofOhio. One hundred years later, Ohio Mills Corporation remains one of America's largest producer of cornmeal products with over 450 employees located throughout 20 states including Ohio as well as Puerto Rico and Canada. During World War II, many residents turned out to help war effort by working at local munitions factories or joining forces with other towns fighting Axis forces within their borders; however few know about this history because most citizens have never heard about it outside of occasional family stories or through high school texts about during World War II in America

A number of airgun ranges were also established during World War II in order to providetarget practice for Luftwaffe pilots flying over Nazi GermanyRAF Bomber Command operations against targets within Hamburgand other German cities were also frequently conducted using target gunsights
