Gunslinger's Slings is a historical museum located in Athens, Ohio, that specializes in the history of handguns and gun slings. The museum contains more than twenty-five thousand items related to the history of handguns and gun slings. It was founded in 1984 by collector Tom Koval. The first handgun hang tag was issued to George Hultman on October 1, 1892. This tag showed that Hultman had received his handgun from John Cockerill, an arms dealer in Cincinnati. On October 16th, 1892, the first shooting took place at the Athens Armory when six people were killed and four injured by James Wills with a Colt Automatic Pistol. In 1896, J.C. Higgins started manufacturing pistols using a new forging process called "Saddleback." In 1898–99 George Barrett Manufacturing Company began producing revolvers chambered for .38 Special ammunition under the name "Barrett". As early as 1899 Harrison & Barnes Arms Co., Ltd., also based in Cincinnati made rifles incorporating single shot breechloading mechanisms with trapdoor magazines which held ten rounds per magazine (10 roundERT = 8 inch). In 1903 Colts began production of their own revolver under the name "Colt Detective". These revolvers were chambered for 9mm Para caliber rounds (9 mm ET = 3/4 inch). From 1902 to 1904 Winchester Repeating Arms Company produced rimfire pistols chambered for 6x22mm Remington cartridges which yielded results much better than loading them into standard rifle stocks with 2 or 4 rounds each (6x22mm powder measure = 12 gauge bullet). By 1907 most firearms manufacturers had introduced double action semi-automatic weapons such as Colt’s Model 1911A1 pistol which could be fired through a “lipstick grip” safety catch activated by depressing two levers on either side of the frame while firing; this system became known as “stovepipe operation” The following year Beretta Romeo Firearms manufactured one million 45ACP revolvers without sights or grips according to author Christopher Dodd who notes it is doubtful whether these pistols ever saw actual use let alone been sold
