AthENS, Ohio (WCPO) - Athens, Ohio is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio and has a population of over 150,000 people as of 2010. It is the county seat for Clark County and part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Athens was made by French traders in 1795. The town was named after General James Wilkinson, commanding an American unit during The Seven Years' War against Great Britain. In 1815, Athens became a village governed by a board of trustees under the auspices of the United States government. In 1824 it became an incorporated municipality with full voting rights and within eight years had attracted 1,500 settlers and become known as "the new Athens." In 1830 Anthon Township was organized from parts of Clarke County. On October 11, 1830 Anthon Township Resolution No. 2 approved an ordinance setting forth that "all men must be white citizens who resided therein at the time when it passed" and ordered all black residents to leave within twenty-four hours or face expulsion from their township according to then-existing law; this order remains in effect to this day as part of African American history in Athens. The city's first school was built on High Street between Main and Elm streets in 1836 on land donated by Reverend Elijah Purdy (1789-1860), one of several founder pastors at First Baptist Church which would later become Washington Park Baptist Church across Fifth Avenue from High Street today (). Classes began September 3rd that year with just 12 students enrollment at US$3 per month each (). In response to growing demand for education opportunities outside of agriculture or manufacturing, City Council voted on August 8th 1837 to establish into endowed schools – both Male & Female – "…for colored children only" making Athens one of America's first cities specifically catering to black Americans through educational means instead of via taxation or purchase from slave owners/masters. This led eventually to increased enrollment throughout high school levels including intercollegiate athletics starting September 3rd 1850 with Men’s Lacrosse moved up from baseball which started February 15th 1840 before becoming Girls’ Lacrosse November 25th 1850 (). For over 100 years AthENS has been home not only to some America’s most highly esteemed universities but also numerous businesses such as GEICO Insurance Company (1902), Coca Cola Bottling Co.(1912), Ford Motor Company(1914), Lucas Oil Refinery(1920) & Owens-Illinois Pipe Line Corporation (1920). Recently significant redevelopment projects have taken place downtown AthENS resultant in more than doubling the size capacity for city services including expanding police department (2007), opening new firehouse(2009) & public library(2010). Noteworthy events included world famous rock concert held on July 4th 2009 headlined by Bruce Springsteen Tickets went on sale December 7th 2008 through Ticketmaster less than one week prior leading up to showtime

After World War II ended hostilities in Europe, Athens experienced rapid growth as businesses returned home to continue operations and new residents moved into areas vacated by soldiers who had served abroad or left town due to economic reasons such as joblessness or war-time shortages of goods essential to everyday life back at home. In recent years there has been an increase in development around downtown Athens which has led to increased traffic congestion oneways within downtown boundaries along High Street between Fifth Avenue/Broadway and Seventh Avenue/East Broadwalk streets
