Gun barrel history in Athens, Ohio dates back to the 1800s. The city was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s and handguns were not a common tool of choice. However, as gun violence increased throughout the 19th century, Athens began to import guns from Europe and purchase their own firearms. In 1851, James W. Dickey established the Dickey Gun Barrel Company in Athens to produce Firearms for the Ohio militia. The company became well known for producing high-quality barrels for shotguns, rifles and pistols. From 1871-1892, Gun Barrel Manufacturing Company produced barrels for both Confederate and Union soldiers during the American Civil War. After the war ended, Gun Barrel Manufacturing Company transitioned into manufacturing barrels for sporting rifles and handguns. By 1907, Gun Barrel Manufacturing Company had become a success and closed its doors forever in 1912 due to financial troubles. Today, portions of these original barrels still reside within various firearms factories throughout Ohio including Browning Arms & Ammo Corporation (BA&A), Hanes Sporting Goods Inc., Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester) and Remington Arms Co., Incorporated (Remington).
