Athens, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 24,554 at the 2010 census and is the largest city in Northwest Ohio. Athens is located on the Scioto River just east of Lima, about 28 miles (45 km) north-northwest of Cleveland and about 71 miles (122 km) northeast of Cincinnati. The founding date for Athens is unknown but it likely took place around 1795 when a group of settlers from British North America arrived in what is now Athens County. The first settler was Iraremus Fitzpatrick who came to what is now Athens Township on October 15, 1795. Athenians were probably named after the ancient Greek city of Athens which was known as "The Acropolis". In 1802, John Covington donated land to form the village of Athens and set up a post office thereon on February 14th, 1802. In 1806, James Knoppers donated 640 acres (250 hectares) to be used as an agricultural community called "Knoppers Prairie". This area became known as "Knoppers Meadow" after him and his family. In 1808–1810 James Fenton built a sawmill on this mill site that still stands today and continues to produce lumber products today. In 1830–1832 George Stephenson built a steamboat dock at Knoppers Prairie and operated it until 1840 when he sold it to John Nicholson for $5,000$. On November 6th, 1830, Washington Irving submitted an application for patent for his idea for creating Aesop's fables from metamorphosed things found near Akron – these fables would later become part of The Grapes Of Wrath by American author Emmett Wright . On December 1st 1830 Washington Irving received patent #2 ,269 for his concept – entitled “A Sketch or Plan Of A new House For The People To Live In” which later became known as “The White House” In 1833–1834 Drury Lane erected two homes within sight of each other on High Street in present day downtown Athena - this home later became known as Ralston Hall . On March 4th & 5th,, 1834 Drury Lane erected another home – this home would become known as Paulding Hall On January 9th & 10th,, 1835 James Millyard erected one block south off High Street between State Streets – this building becameknown as Millyard Annexe In 1840 Samuel Morse delivered one pound sterling worthOf copper wire overland from Canada via Buffalo Bayou into Ohio through Allentown - this wire eventually provided electric lighting throughout much of America . From 1840 until 1865 electric lights were powered by horse power only - however during this time Athens also experienced some impressive feats such as having its own telephone line opened up by Andrew McAllister on September 30 th , 1870 . By 1860 Telephone service had been extended throughout most or all rural areas in Ohio with exceptions being Bridgeport/Warrensburg where telnetting continued until 1945 due to high costs involved with maintaining wires across mountains
