The Athens-Muncie rifle company was founded in 1876 by John D. Sauer and Samuel W.Aiken. In 1888, the Athens Rifle Company became part of the Ohio National Rifle Association (ONRA). The company produced bolt action rifles until 1915 when it switched to semi-automatic firearms. The company closed in 1945.

Manned Armament Division (MAC) was created in 1944 as a result of the American War Production Board's design for an armaments manufacturing center in the Chicago area. MAC became operational on October 1, 1944 and produced small arms, artillery, armor, and other munitions. The division was disbanded on January 1, 1945.
After the American Revolution, Athens was a small town in Adams County, Ohio. The first European settlers arrived in 1792 and named the community after their home city of Athens, Greece. By 1800, Athens had a population of about eighty-five people. In 1802, the United States Congress created Adams County out of part of Michigan Territory. The new county included Athens and six other townships. In 1805, Athens became the seat ofAdams County when it was created from parts of Geauga and Union counties. The courthouse was built on what is now Elm Street in downtown Athens. In 1808, President James K. Polk appointed George Stephenson as secretary of state to fill the vacancy caused by John Quincy Adams’s death. On December 12, 1810, Stephensons ordered construction begun on the Cincinnati and Dayton Railroad which would connect Cincinnati with Toledo and Columbus respectively. A market opened in Athens in1814 to provide goods for local farmers and traders who shipped their products downriver to Cleveland or Pittsburgh through Canandaigua Lake near modern day Butler Township (now part of Monroe Township). By 1830, there were five stores and thirty-six business owners in Athens. Streets were named after local pioneers such as Joshua Lancelot Marshall (1784-1852), Elijah Howe (1785-1856), Ebenezer Kirkland (1800-1875), Cyrus Finch (1800-1860) and Hiram Bellows (1796-1872). In 1840, Representative Daniel Webster sponsored a resolution authorizing $1 million for road improvements throughout Ohio including an improved road between Cincinnati and Toledo that would become known as the "Webster Road". The money was raised by selling tickets at fairs across Ohio; one such event took place on October 10th at Liberty Hall in downtown Cincinnati attended by more than three thousand people interested in witnessing its opening up wide access to trade with Indiana via this route - something unheard of at that time! The completion date for this important highway has been incorrectly reported as being July 1st but actually December 4th – making it one of America’s earliest public works projects! In 1850 Representative Milton Swayne introduced a bill requesting $5 million be appropriated for school improvement throughout Ohio including building schools at Tiffin ($4 million) Fairfield ($2 million) Sandusky ($1 million)and Wooster($800 thousand). This legislation failed because no appropriation could be made until two years later when $8 million had already been authorized!
Athens, Ohio was founded by George Washington in 1792. It became a city in 1801. The city was named for Athens, Alabama, which was the capital of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.
