Ashtabula is a small town located in the heart of Ohio. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. Ashtabula spans over three centuries and has seen many changes throughout that time. Today, Ashtabula is a thriving community with a rich history and culture. The first people to live in present-day Ashtabula were European settlers who arrived in 1796. They built the first permanent home in what is now Ashtabula Township. The settlers were farmers and their families enjoyed growing crops and raising livestock until 1814, when Ohio statehood was granted to the United States. During the years after Ohio became an independent country, there were few opportunities for white men to own land because of legal restrictions on black migration into central Ohio. This led to tension between white landowners and African Americans who had (still) worked on their farms while they awaited passage to Ulysses S. Grant’s new country. On July 4, 1863, Confederate soldiers burned down several white homes in what is now downtown Ashtabula as part of an effort to incite violence against Union troops occupying rural areas across the state during the American Civil War. After Ohio gained its independence from Great Britain, most of the original white settlers moved away from Ashtabula due to lack of opportunities or war-related effects on their lives outside of work on farmsteads or dependent upon trade with other states for goods and services essential for life such as food production or transportation (the only commercially viable option at that time). Some later returned but by 1949 only 10 percent remained within city limits; 90 percent lived outside city limits then also today (although citizens may vote within city limits through local elections). Ashtabula was a town in Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton metropolitan area. The Town of Ashtabula was founded in 1814 by General David Wilkinson and others as a post office on the Scioto River. In 1830, it became an incorporated town. In 1836, it lost its charter due to lack of support from the state government; however, it regained its charter in 1838. On December 12, 1840, Ashtabula was burned down by a mob after anti-slavery activists blockaded the courthouse square; this event is cited as one of the most significant moments in Ohio history. In 1865, when Ohio became a slave state and slavery ended within three years of Ohio's admission into that union as a free state (the Union), Ashtabula voted to extended voting rights to freed slaves and became one of 36 townships in southwestern Ohio newly admitted into the Union as part of Lincoln's New National Territory. The township seat moved from Scioto Falls to Ashtabula several times over the next few decades until 1870 when it finally relocated to what is now downtown Akron due to increased railroad traffic throughout that portion of OH. The first store opened on Fourth Street in downtown Akron on October 1st 1870 by A W Hensley who also built what is now First National Bank limited liability company building which still stands today! The city limits were set off along Volney Road eastward from Main Street about 1900 when Ansonia began growth making restrictions for development along VolneyRoad because they feared competition for land surrounding City Limits coming through their territory which would have been near Downtown Akron with access to roads and other resources! Ashtabulas ties with local businesses has made it difficult for any large scale redevelopment taking place outside Downtown Akron but there are some projects like new apartments being developed at Third & Vine just east side of Market Square which will change all that soon enough!
